Ok, that was something I didn't know about Tokyo. Damn, I knew I
shouldn't have assumed rent in their suburbs was about the same as over
here.
Anyway, how about this:

was going to write you a check for..." Ranma shook his head, smiling.
"Nuku and I'll take a detour to the bank today after school and get the
money for you."

Considering that a really cheap apartment in Tokyo will cost you
approximately 80,000 yen a month, 'Only ten thousand' is a rather
restrained answer. You might want to make it a bit more. Even
here in the US, 100 dollars a month is extremely cheap. Most
parents charge their children more than that if they charge them
rent.
