Chapter 2 Bedside Manner
----------
"Itai...." said a very tired and very sore Xelloss Metallium as he
tried to raise his head from the coarse fabric of the inn bed. He
wasn't at all sure where he was or why he was still alive. The last
thing he could recall was seeing his mistress form a shield to protect
them both -- Xelas raising a hand toward him, and muttering a few
words of power under her breath. Then he felt himself being tossed
through another dimension while being burned alive by some magic he'd
never felt before.
-Somehow he'd been teleported away from mistress to land... where was
he? He glanced around the still darkened room for as far as he could
see, but there was something obscuring his vision. It looked like...
red hair? Suddenly Xelloss felt the overwhelming need to sit up.
"Wahh!?!?!?" came a startled yelp as the plucky young sorcery genius
by the name of Lina Inverse slid off her bed to land upon the cold
hard-wooden floor. She was not at all happy that someone had disturbed
her sleep.
"Whoever woke me up had better have flame insurance," she thought
darkly. Then it all came back to her. Xelloss. He had shown up in the
greeting room and she had worked desperately to save him. There was
something that Xelloss had said, something about a Pentasama something
or other. She hadn't been paying that much attention-- at the time,
she had been more worried that he would die before she could heal him.
And then there was the matter of Xelloss having human blood. Since he
was presumably well enough to knock her off the bed, now was the time
to get some answers.
At the same time, a similar flood of thoughts were running through
Xelloss' mind as well, except he was unaware that by sitting up he had
put himself on the 'inflict pain' targets list of Lina's . He was fast
returning to a semblance of his normal calm, cool and secretive self.
Unfortunately , it was only when Lina had him in a headlock that he
remembered he was human.
"Hold it! Lina, wait a minute! I'm human now, and a broken neck would
really complicate things!" stammered a blue-in-the-face Xelloss.
Lina relaxed her hold on the tricky trickster priest, perched herself
upon a bed-pillow, and said very plainly, "Yeah that is true. You are
human now. How'd that happen? And what was that you were saying about
an amulet?" She fixed her eyes menacingly upon him and moved her
hands to rest resolutely upon her hips.
Xelloss' calm held as he straightened his shabby appearance, once
again noting that he would need a new suit.
"Umm... Well. You see... That is a..." he never got to finish his
favorite phrase due to Lina whacking him forcefully on the head with
her shoulder guards.
"No. Xelloss, your 'that is a secret' junk won't cut it this time. You
show up half-dead, and I save your life, the least you can do is tell
me the truth!" burst Lina. She was fed up with his aloof, secretive
act and she still wasn't quite over those feelings of depression and
abandonment.
With that, he sighed. There was no way he could survive a brush with
Lina in his current condition. He would have to resort to the most
dreadful thing imaginable. It would be risky, Lina had always
possessed a hair trigger on her temper and if the task became too
difficult he would certainly die a fiery death.
His eyes, perpetually hidden beneath closed eyelids, slid their
position downward indicating he was in deep thought. Lina tilted her
head further toward him and cleared her throat to remind him she was
still present.
"Okay, Lina-san" was his very succinct, very to-the-point answer. Lina
fell off the bed again.
