NOTES
I figured you all wanted to know what happened
to Treize-sama... thus this side-story. ^_^
SIDE STORY: THE ASCENSION OF TREIZE
They had disappeared before his very eyes.
Treize Khushrenada's gloved fingers hovered
over the fingers of the notebook computer
plugged into the transmitter of the Tallgeese
II. He had been working his way through the
Epyon's systems, downloading some things
to counter-act the mind-warping effects of
the Zero System and give Zechs something
to remind him of his honorable past, when it
had disappeared. In the middle of transmitting
his personal message, yet.
"Treize-sama?"
Lady Une's voice rang in the Tallgeese II's
cockpit.
"Hai, Lady Une. I hear you."
"The Gundams...!"
"I know. And as confused as we are, the
White Fang must be moreso. Colonel Gehn?"
"Sir!" came Gehn's strong voice. The former
OZ soldier landed beside Treize, his distinctive
gunmetal-gray Taurus having finally arrived with
more Leos from Earth.
"Take the troops in. I will be along in a
moment."
"Aye, sir. First wing!"
As Gehn began to bark orders, Treize brought
the Tallgeese II into a standing position (he'd
been kneeling) and turned towards MO-II.
"Lady Une. Does MO-II posess any nuclear
weapons?"
There was a pause.
"We have one 50 kiloton warhead in cold
storage, Treize-sama. Why do you... ?"
"Warm it up. When it is prepared, bring
it to Landing Bay Theta and inform me at once."
"H... hai, Treize-sama."
Treize turned back to the impending
battle. He opened the Tallgeese II's verniers
and took of at full thrust.
As he sped past the others and caught up
with Colonel Gehn, he could hear the gasps and
cheers that followed him.
He prayed their faith in him was not
misplaced.

"Disappeared, eh?"
Doctor J adjusted his goggles as Professor
G's mushroom-haired head bobbed.
"Competely gone from all scans. I
registered a huge temporal disturbance, then
it was all gone."
"Some kind of dimensional shift?" posed
Instructor H, twirling one of his long mustaches.
"Most likely," Master O rumbled.
"Right. Then we give what help we can to
Treize Khushrenada."
They all looked at Doctor J like he had
suddenly grown a tail.
"Are you that mad?" Doctor S retorted. "It's
Treize we've been fighting all this while!"
"Think about it. The White Fang want to
destroy the Earth. The original Operation
Meteor."
"Whereas Treize simply wants to rule the
Earth Sphere!"
"He'd keep it safe," Professor G said,
"provided he can stop pursuing combative ends
to his problems."
"You're one to talk," Instructor H chuckled,
"in fact we're all fools to try and tell Treize
Khushrenada how to rule without arms when we
built arms ourselves."
"Regardless, he'll be in our neighborhood
soon," Doctor J said finally. "Since the White
Fang were so kind as to leave us such a convenient
air duct system, like the one that got us
here, should we not use it to the fullest, and
find their auxilliary power shunt?"
"Cut off the power to their weapons?"
"Exactly. Then all Treize has to do is get
through the Mobile Dolls."
Professor G and the others nodded. "Let's
go. We don't have much time."

The dobergun sounded basso death over and
over again. Leos swarmed around Treize as he
carried the battle to the foe. Colonel Gehn
had tried so hard not to idolize Treize from
the beginning, but it had been difficult. Now,
seeing his commander in all his combative glory,
Gehn could see that Treize was a man worth
emulating. Smiling, he swung his Taurus behind
a line of Virgos and, having kept his beam cannon
at full charge, mowed them down to give his
troops an opening.
"Come on, men, you want to live forever? We
have a planet to save!"
Treize Khushrenada smiled to himself. Gehn
was exuberant, even a little foolhardy at times,
but an excellent and loyal warrior. As he fired
another round from the dobergun, he wondered
how many officers like Gehn had yet to be
discovered... and how many would lose their lives
fighting this battle for him.
For him. For Treize Khushrenada.
Treize still found it unbelieveable that men
so willingly gave up their lives for a man whose
road to ascension was paved in so much blood.
But a good deal of that blood had been shed in
honorable combat, even against these heartless
foes. And in this, the last battle, Treize knew
he would cheapen the memory of the fallen if
he did not fight on the front lines by the sides
of his loyal fellow warriors.
"Treize-sama?"
Then, there was Lady Une...
"We've found the warhead. It's in a
container in Landing Bay Theta, as per your
request."
"Excellent. Colonel Gehn, keep our White
Fang friends occupied. I have something I need
to pick up."
"Understood. Second Unit, close up that
flank!"
~ * * * * * * * ~
Quinze ground his teeth. They'd been so
close! Operation Meteor had been close to
true fruition. Now with Commander Milliardo
gone, he would have to guide the Libra down
himself. But with the Gundams gone as well,
one of his major opponents had disappeared.
The reports he was getting were disturbing,
however. Apparently, since Commander Milliardo
and Dorothy Catalonia had left, the behavior of
the Mobile Dolls had become more sporadic, less
focused. And more and more Leos and even some
Taurus units were arriving from Earth, and now
even other colonies! What was going on?
"Sir! We're picking up a transmission from
MO-II! It's on a broad frequency!"
"Let me see it!" Quinze snapped, pushing
a man out of his way to get to a monitor.
"...ite Fang is not fighting for you," said
the voice of Lady Une. The images were of the
battle outside, with Libra in almost every shot.
"Their true leader, a madman, plans to destroy
the Earth, our common homeland. More meaningless
battles will not bring about peace, which is the
ultimate goal of many people, both on Earth and
the Colonies. And our best hope for peace at
the moment is Treize Khushrenada."
"Damn that woman," Quinze growled.
"Sir! We've just lost all power to the
weapon systems?"
"WHAT?"
Quinze ran over to the status screen.
Somehow, the auxiliary power shunt that fed
the weapons systems had gone down! What...?
"Check on the prisoners..." he was
saying as a security man burst in.
"Sir, the Gundam scientists have
escaped!"
"Dammit, hunt them down! I want them
dead, now!"
The man saluted and was gone. Quinze
slammed his fist into the bulkhead.
What more could go wrong in his
plans...?
~ * * * * * * * ~
The Tallgeese II knelt in Landing
Bay Theta. The dobergun fell away from
the right shoulder, and the mobile suit
drew one of its beam sabers. Tucking
the drum-shaped warhead under its left
arm, it stood and took off again.
Lady Une watched it from the
command center of MO-II. She knew
what Treize-sama was going to do. But
what would she and the rest of the
World Nation do without him? And what
of the report she'd just gotten about
Treize's daughter, Mariemaia, who was
reported in the vacinity of feldgling
colony X-18999?
What was she, Lady Une, going to
do without him...?
~ * * * * * * * ~
Treize set his jaw and went to
work. The beam saber cleaved through
mobile dolls magnificently. While he only
had one arm free, it was more than enough.
He's always known that a real soldier was
more than capable of overcoming these soulless
machines. He tucked the warhead closer to him.
If he was going to die, let it be in honorable
combat...
An off-side shot from a mobile doll
caught him off-guard. It glanced of the
Tallgeese's sheild, but it was enough
to jostle the warhead loose. Cursing,
he went to dive after it when a gray
streak flashed past him, snatching up
the warhead.
"Gehn...!"
"You're too valuable, sir!" Gehn replied.
"We can't afford to lose you!"
"Colonel Gehn, get back here! That's
an order!"
"Sorry, sir...Special wing?"
Five mobile suits got between the Tallgeese
II and Gehn's Taurus. They were new models, the
prototypes of the Serpents. They were not
complete - Treize could see parts of the suits
that were not armored and some of them were
lacking the shoulder-mounted missile launchers -
but their intention was clear... to protect him.
He closed his eyes and relit the beam saber.
"Gehn... I will honor your nobility and
courage always."
"Thank you, sir... this is the least I can
do for you! Your destiny is to save the Earth
Sphere, not die in the attempt!"
Lady Une felt her heart leap into her throat
as the exchange took place. He was going to live!
She broke into a smile as Treize-sama went to
work on the mobile dolls again, rallying the
proto-Serpents, Leos and Tauruses around him
for the final thrust. And one Taurus weaved
through lines of mobile dolls towards his
target...
Colonel Gehn smiled as he moved closer
to Libra. The special sensor-evading coating
he'd had added to his Taurus was working wonders
against both the Libra's and the mobile dolls'
sensors. But he was also one of the best Taurus
pilots in the World Nation. And he was using
his skills to bring the war to a close so
Treize could ascend to the throne, as he was
meant to.
Ever since Gehn's wife and daughter had
died at the hands of a Romefeller development
"accident" involving one of the Taurus mobile
dolls on Earth, Gehn had dedicated himself to
mastering the quirky mobile suit and using it
to bring peace to the world and at the same
time bring about the demise of the Foundation.
When Treize had stepped down as the leader of
OZ, Gehn had been among the soliders that had
joined him. He had survived Operation Nova
and the Artemis Revolution, and now he was
going to bring an end to the Eve Wars. Not
a Gundam pilot, not a famous ace, but a
solider from out of the trenches.
Treize had to like that, Gehn thought
with a smile as Libra loomed ever closer.
Quinze growled as the mobile doll's
numbers began to thin out. The new
prototypes, lead by Treize, were somehow
tearing up his ranks! How was this
possible?
"Check the Mobile Doll control system!"
he ordered.
"It's off-line!"
Those damned scientists...!
"Sir, security reporting in. They
found the scientists as they were attempting
to turn off the life support system. The
scientists have been executed."
"Good. Now, get our systems back on..."
"Sir! One mobile suit has gotten into
the superstructure...!"
"What in...?"
Gehn closed his eyes as the shaft into
Libra's power core became a straight course.
"Seisui, my beautiful wife... Muzei, my
lovely daughter... I'll be with you soon..."
He keyed the warhead's countdown. This
was it...
Treize saw the countdown flash on the
display in the Tallgeese. He ordered all
his troops to retreat and turned away
himself, boosting up to full power, and
offering a silent prayer for Gehn's
courageous soul...
The flash of the warhead detonating lit
up all of space. Lady Une turned her head
from the monitor, covering her face as the
shockwave rocked MO-II. Her eyes were wide,
shocked. Had Treize-sama turned around in
time? She could almost see his face
crease with worry at the sight that there
wasn't enough time...
"Look!"
The light faded as she turned around.
There, standing before a line of mobile
suits with their arms raised in victory,
was the Tallgeese II. It's right hand was
on the shoulder of one of the new designs,
but the head raised and looked in her
direction. She felt the smile come at
the same time she felt the warmth in
her cheeks.
They had done it. They had won.
The world was saved, and ready to
accept their new ruler... a man of honor,
courage and justice...
~ * * * * * * * ~
Treize Khushrenada looked over the
report. Surprisingly few casualties after
the disappearance of the Gundams. Colonel
Alistair Gehn had been given a full-honors
military memorial, a granite Taurus erected
outside the Advanced Special Training
Academy. His wife and daughter would have
been proud, Treize thought.
"Treize-sama?"
He turned. Lady Une stood at his door,
respelendant in a power blue ballgown. His
uniform was in top condition, but she walked
over and fiddled with one of his many medals
anyway.
"They're waiting for you. They all
expect the announcement of your leadership
tonight."
"I know. But regardless of that, lady,
I have an announcement of my own I'd like
to make."
She looked up at him, eyes curious yet
excited and almost knowing what he was going
to say. He smiled his confident smirk and
laid a gloved finger on her lips.
"But not yet. Let's surprise the world
together."
"Hai," was all she could say, and Treize
took the arm of his lady and walked out into
the ballroom and into his destiny...
