A Couple of Angels

Chapter 14

"You won the duel, Miss Utena. Therefore, I am now your bride," Rei said in
a quiet monotone, looking Asuka in the eyes with her unblinking gaze.

A shout of "Cut!" sounded throughout the hall. Hikari stalked towards her
two classmates, waving the script at them menacingly. Shinji trailed behind
the class president sheepishly, avoiding eye contact with his co-pilots.

"What's wrong now, Hikari?" Asuka asked impatiently. "How many times are we
going to repeat the same goddamned scene?!"

"Hik...I mean, Miss Horaki," Shinji started hesitantly. "Rei is reading the
script perfectly. Why..."

"She may be reading the words, but she doesn't put any feelings behind
them!" Hikari retorted hotly, giving Shinji a warning glare in the process.
The boy shrunk back and whimpered. Turning towards Rei, Hikari met her gaze
without flinching. "Rei, don't just read the script out loud. Live the
script! Be the scri... I mean, be Anthy!"

Rei nodded curtly, and turned back to Asuka. As Hikari and Shinji retreated
back to their seats in the audience, her thoughts wandered to an event that
occurred almost two months prior. She, Ranma and Asuka went to eat ice-cream
together. Ranma decided to go in his female form, but when she confronted
him about it, he replied that girls didn't look weird pigging out on
ice-cream... and that the looks Asuka kept sending his male form whenever
they occasionally met bothered him.

She had been happy then... and it was the last time she felt that way,
because shortly afterwards...

Rei heard Asuka coughing slightly and snapped out of her reverie. The words
flowed out of her mouth on their own, a ray of happiness coated in
bitterness and hopelessness underlining them. Rei heard Shinji and Hikari
inhale sharply in the back, but didn't let it trouble her. Asuka smiled
widely at her, acting... but the smile was genuine, Rei could feel. And it
was directed at her. The thought made her happy... not nearly as happy as
she had been that time, but enough to make her smile slightly in return...

"CUT!"

Hikari stalked over to the pair of actors once more, a vein popping on her
forehead. "Rei, you are not supposed to smile now! What were you thinking?!"

"Haven't you heard of actors improvising?" Asuka replied, sticking up for
her co-pilot. "Besides, actors of our great caliber should not be restricted
to some script!"

"Without a script there would be chaos! Discord! War! Famine! Is that what
you want, Soryu? Is it?!"

"Don't give me that crap, Horaki! Besides, we already are at war!"

"See? See what happens when we ignore the script?!"

Asuka threw her hands in the air in exasperation.

"Now, if only everyone would be my perfect dolls and do as I say..." Hikari
pressed on, before being cut off by an angry Asuka who had gotten a second
wind.

"We are not your dolls!"

The bickering only worsened, until both of the girls asked Shinji for his
opinion. Shrinking under their combined glare, the boy whimpered for the
second time that day. The catfight intensified, and Shinji found himself
drawn into it against his will. Students gathered and started cheering their
favorites on...

Rei sighed. This was going to be a long day.

Toji chose that moment to walk over to the blue-haired girl casually,
carrying a few props in his hands. "They went at it _again_?" he asked
tiredly.

Rei blinked, and let her head drop.

"I see."

"Where is Aida?" Rei asked, her head still bowed.

"Kensuke?" Toji looked momentarily startled. "I thought you knew. His
activation test with Unit 03 is today."

Rei's head whipped back up to look at Toji intently. Seeing that he wasn't
trying to fool her, she called out, "Ikari-kun! Asuka!"

While she hadn't exactly shouted, everyone stopped to look at her. Rei was
about to continue when three cell phones rang loudly in unison.

--------------------------------------------------

The three pilots ran towards Nerv, warning sirens blazing around the city.
Citizens were ordered to evacuate Tokyo-3 as soon as possible. Rei ignored
all that, as she tried to get to Nerv as soon as possible.

"Are you comfortable running in those clothes?" Shinji asked timidly, taking
long, deep breaths.

"Anta baka?" Asuka asked him with a snort. "Of course not! But we are under
attack. There was no time to go and change our clothing."

"I suppose so," Shinji agreed meekly.

"What's the matter with you, anyway? Where's that spine you had?"

"It died a very painful death," Shinji said quietly, yet loud enough for
Asuka to overhear.

Snickering, the red-head gave him a smile. "So there's still fight in you
yet."

Shinji tried to reply, but his words gave way to a coughing fit. The boy
resolved to run quietly from that point on, and train his body more
frequently in the future. 'Like Hikari says, endurance is everything.'

Running closer to the blue-haired girl, Asuka asked her, "Do you know what's
going on?"

Rei frowned. Rather than replying to the question, she asked another in its
stead. "Were you aware of Aida's activation test with Unit 03?"

"That stooge? Sure, Misato told me and Shinji about it. What's that got to
do with anything?"

Rei continued to run the rest of the way in silence, ignoring Asuka. The
red-head gave up after a few unsuccessful tries, vowing to find out what was
troubling her friend later.

As Rei continued her run to Nerv, one thought repeated itself in her mind.
'He doesn't trust me anymore.'

--------------------------------------------------

"M-Misato-san! W-What's wrong?" Shinji asked the Major, gasping for air.

"Shinji, you're here! I'm glad," the purple-haired woman said with a smile.
"Where are Asuka and Rei?"

Taking a few deep breaths, Shinji replied, "They had to change."

"Change?" Misato mused out loud, before her eyes lit in recognition. "The
school play!" Her smile turned apologetic. "I guess we ruined your
preparations, didn't we?"

Shinji recalled the situation he had been in when his phone rang, and shook
his head vigorously to the negative. "That's alright, Misato-san. Really. I
don't mind."

"Good," the Commander's voice carried over the speakers. "Major, get the
pilots into the briefing room."

Misato affirmed the command, and took Shinji with her. On the way they met
Rei and Asuka, both already clad in plug suits.

"Let's go, girls. We're going to have a briefing before sending you out."

"What's this about, Misato?" Asuka asked, putting her hands on her hips. "I
thought there was an Angel attack! We rushed here as fast as we could! How
come there is time for some stinking briefing?"

"Don't whine, Asuka," Misato admonished the red-head with a small frown.
"These are the Commander's orders."

Asuka's frown matched Misato's, but she conceded the point and followed the
Major along with Rei and Shinji.

--------------------------------------------------

"Is this our target?" Asuka asked, pointing at the Angel on the screen.

Shinji suppressed a shudder. "It looks weird... alien..."

Rei merely looked at the eyes painted on the Angel's body. 'He... he is
alright.'

"Excuse me, Misato-san. Where is Kensuke?" Shinji asked, finally noticing
that they were a pilot short at the briefing.

"Aida had been delivered to a secondary location for further testing along
with Unit 03," Commander Ikari answered his son, not once looking in his
direction.

Rei's frown returned. She kept on staring at the tactical display, listening
to the briefing and nodding at all the right places. The question of whether
she wanted to leave a will puzzled her for a brief moment, but she ended up
shaking her head to the negative. She would not die, even if her body did.
Hence, the need for a will was nonexistent. That was also why the predicted
chances of the mission's success did not bother her in the slightest.

The order to sortie followed shortly after, and she went quietly to her
Evangelion. The LCL filled her entry plug, and she took a long breath to let
her lungs adapt to it. The EVA rocketed to the surface, sending the
blue-haired girl reeling backwards in her seat due to the sudden
acceleration. Once reaching its designated position, Unit 00 fell silent,
crouching in preparation of the mission ahead.

Rei silently nodded to herself, and opened private communication lines to
the pilots of Evangelions 01 and 02. "Ikari-kun, Asuka," she greeted, bowing
her head slightly at the screens that popped up in front of her, "we must
succeed in defeating this Angel on our own. Aida must not be allowed to
synchronize with Unit 03."

"This again..." Asuka groused over the comm. "What's so wrong with the
stooge going through a little activation test in that EVA?" Wrinkling her
nose, the red-head added speculatively, "Sure, the EVA might reek of him
afterwards, but still..."

"It's important to you, isn't it, Ayanami?" Shinji asked, biting on his
lower lip and looking down.

"Yes," Rei replied quietly in her monotone.

"In that case, we'll do it," Shinji told her with a meek smile.

Asuka smirked arrogantly, grinning at the other girl. "What the wuss said.
I'm not going to allow a stooge to rob me of my glorious victory!"

Rei nodded, and closed her communication channels to the other pilots.

"What do you think really bothers her?" Asuka asked Shinji once the albino
girl left.

The pilot of Unit 01 shrugged helplessly. "Beats me. This is Ayanami, after
all. Who can tell what's on her mind most of the time?"

Asuka's face grew, until it took the entire monitor. Leveling a withering
glare at the now cowering other pilot, she asked menacingly, "You wouldn't
be badmouthing my friend, now would you?"

Shinji wilted visibly, trying to shrink as much into his seat as possible,
holding back a sigh. 'I wish I could just dissolve into the LCL!'

--------------------------------------------------

Maya stopped monitoring the private transmissions between the trio of pilots
with a sigh of her own. It wasn't really nice to eavesdrop like that, but
Ritsuko asked her to keep an eye on the Children before leaving on that
awful mission alone.

While Maya knew about the risks of allowing pilots to synchronize with
different Evangelions, they were still considered negligible, not to mention
purely theoretical. Did the enigmatic blue-haired girl know something... or
was she just projecting her psychological trauma over that nearly-fatal
activation test of Unit 00?

"I wish Sempai was here," Maya whispered dejectedly.

Ritsuko was so smart! She would know what to do; she always did. But Ritsuko
wasn't here, and if the Commander ordered to sortie EVA 03... Commander
Ikari was so scary!

Maya sighed, drawing curious looks from her colleagues. She waved at them
with an embarrassed smile, blushing in embarrassment.

Just then, a thought crossed her mind. A thought so simple that she flushed
in embarrassment once again. She would just follow orders like a good little
bridge bunny until Ritsuko returned, and then everything will be alright
again! Flowers would smell good again, coffee would regain its special
flavor, and all the problems would be solved. It was a foolproof plan!

Maya couldn't help but giggle a few times, drawing confused and curious
stares at her once again.

--------------------------------------------------

"The Angel is beginning its descent," the Commander's dispassionate voice
sounded through the internal speakers of all the four Evangelions. "Ayanami,
Ikari and Soryu will converge on the projected point of impact, with Aida
serving as their backup. That is all."

Kensuke's heart swelled with pride as he heard the words. He was finally in
the action! In the center of it all, just like he always wanted. No more
playing soldier on the outskirts of Tokyo-3! He was finally a real
soldier... a manly soldier... the savior of millions... billions; no, the
entire world!

He was unstoppable! He and his trusty mecha would protect democracy and
peace world wide from the vicious alien attacks, and become a hero
worshipped by countless eager babes!

But if that was true... why was he backup?

Kensuke gritted his teeth in frustration.

This couldn't be right! This just couldn't be! Unless...

Unless the Commander was testing him. Yes! That had to be it!

He, Kensuke Aida, Evangelion pilot extraordinaire, would defeat the evil
Angel on his own and prove himself!

Now, where was the 'on' switch again?

--------------------------------------------------

"First child?"

The giant screen showed the blue haired girl. "Affirmative."

"Second Child?"

The picture changed in a flash to display Asuka giving her a thumbs up.
"Yeah!"

"Third Child?"

Shinji's face shone in the darkness. "Ready."

Misato quickly glanced at the ready board and at her warriors. "Go!" she
shouted to the EVAs, who started jogging to catch the rapidly descending
Angel immediately upon receiving her signal.

A bleep from a nearby console startled the Major. Swerving to face the
now-blinking monitor that started showing warning screens, she paled.

"Ritsuko, what the hel..." Suddenly recalling that her friend was away on
some top secret mission, Misato turned her head towards Maya, asking,
"What's going on?" curtly.

"I don't know!" Maya yelled in panic, jumping from her seat and backing away
from her terminal. "It... the EVA... but I didn't!"

Misato grabbed the younger woman by her shoulders to steady her, and then
slapped her a few times. Raising Maya's chin until she looked into the other
woman's teary eyes, the Major glared at her.

"Pull yourself together!"

"Y-Yes, Ma'am." Maya nodded hesitantly, and returned to her post.

As the warning screens continued flashing, Fuyutsuki threw a sidelong glance
at the Commander. Gendo Ikari was observing the action seemingly
impassively, but the Sub-Commander noticed his eyebrow twitching slightly
every so often.

'Watch your plans go down in ashes, Rokubungi,' Fuyutsuki thought, smirking
internally. 'Watch them all burn!'

--------------------------------------------------

"Where is this place?" Kensuke asked out loud, staring around himself in
wonder. "What is this place?"

It had been all too simple to activate the Evangelion, but instead of boldly
marching forward he was now... where no other pilot had ever gone before?

Well, that was swell and all, but he had a job to do! He was a heroic
warrior of justice... they needed him - no, they relied upon him! It was his
sworn duty to protect the innocents. He just _had_ to be there! How else
would the Angel be defeated?

"Boy, you really are a moron, aren't you?"

Kensuke whirled around, coming face to face with a smirking raven-haired boy
sitting on the ground next to a small fire. The other boy smirked at him,
picked up a burning stick from the flame and admired it for a few long
moments, completely ignoring Kensuke.

The newly-picked Evangelion pilot was getting impatient, when the pigtailed
boy looked straight at him. "You're not supposed to be here, you know," he
said, casually throwing the burning branch in his direction.

The stick fell to the ground near Kensuke's feet and immediately set a
circle of fire around the boy. The bespectacled boy gasped and tried to get
away, only to have the flames rise impossibly high from every direction,
teasing him with their heat.

Kensuke screamed.

--------------------------------------------------

"Major, Kensuke's life signs are dropping rapidly!" Maya shouted without
turning away from her station.

Misato grit her teeth in anger. "How about Aida's synchronization rate? Can
we extract him?"

After typing a few commands on her keyboard and calling up several displays
on her monitor, Maya shook her head briefly. "No, Ma'am. His synchronization
rate is the same as during that other time Unit 03 went berserk. Just like
with Ranko, the EVA is not receiving the abort signal!"

"Divert all of the Magi's resources from EVA 03 to calculating the Angel's
trajectory!" Commander Ikari commanded suddenly.

Misato looked back at the man. "With all due respect, Sir, the boy..."

"Is replaceable," Gendo Ikari said without betraying a hint of emotion. He
took the time to push his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "The operation
must not fail. Allowing the Angel to destroy the Geofront and Tokyo-3 is
unacceptable."

The Major looked ready to argue, but he added, "You have your orders."

"Yes, Sir," Maya acknowledged timidly, allowing Misato to save face.

The purple-haired woman, for her part, remained silent and continued to
observe the main screen, her left hand clutching the cross around her neck.

--------------------------------------------------

"Am I still alive?" Kensuke wondered, getting up from the floor. 'Funny, I
don't remember going to sleep...'

"In a way."

"Huh?" Kensuke's head whipped to the left to stare dumbly at the same
pigtailed boy from before, who was now sitting on a decorated throne.

"What you should be asking instead is 'Are you still alive?'" The smirk
never left the boy's face.

Still in shock over the surrealistic ordeal he was experiencing, Kensuke
repeated, "Are you still alive?"

"Now that..." came the reply, "is a secret!"

What seemed like several minutes passed in silence, before inspiration
struck the bespectacled boy and he asked, "Who are you? What do you want?"
Not letting the other boy to reply, he kept on hurling new questions at him
excitedly. "Where are you going? Whom do you serve?! Whom do you trust?!?"

"Ranma... and the rest in non of your business."

'Well, at least _that_ part was easy,' Kensuke thought giddily. 'And now I
got his name! Score one for the Stud Muffin!'

Ranma grimaced, but forced himself to answer with only a slight twitch of
his left eyebrow. "Of course it was. Right now, we are of one mind. Kinda."
Distaste could vaguely be heard in his voice, but the other boy ignored it
as insignificant.

"This is beyond weird," Kensuke breathed out.

Ranma shrugged, and rose from his throne, taking a few steps towards the
other boy leisurely. Kensuke backed away slowly, eyeing him warily.

"Oh, come off it!" Ranma snorted, and disappeared from sight.

Kensuke looked around frantically for any sign of him, only to jump upwards
when he felt a light tap on the back of his head.

"Gotcha!" Ranma smiled widely, putting both hands behind his head and
stretching out lazily.

"Don't do that!" Kensuke yelled, pointing an accusing finger at him.

Ranma quirked an eyebrow at the display, and brought his hands to the front,
crossing them over his chest after flexing his biceps a few times.

"If you don't mind, of course," Kensuke quickly amended, making warding
gestures with his hands and backing away.

When Ranma's shoulders started shaking, Kensuke brought his hands over his
head reflexively and closed his eyes. 'You've done it now!' he accused
himself silently. 'You just _had_ to annoy the big bad guy that can beat the
crap out of you without even breaking a sweat!'

Ranma chuckled, and Kensuke cautiously opened his right eye and looked at
the other boy from behind the relative safety of his hands.

"Man, you are as stupid as you look, aren't you?" Ranma got out between
chuckles.

Kensuke relaxed and stood up straight. He was about to glare at the now
laughing pigtailed boy, when he thought better of it.

"Umm, can you tell me why you brought me here... that is, if you don't have
anything better to do like laughing at me..."

"I'm shocked," Ranma said, his laughter dying. "You actually have a
mini-spine. I'm impressed."

Kensuke gulped.

"Hey, don't be like that!" Ranma walked over to the other boy, slapping his
back in a friendly manner a few times, almost causing the smaller boy to
topple over. "It was an honest to goodness compliment!"

"Umm, thanks, I guess." Kensuke chuckled nervously.

"Don't mention it," Ranma said off-handedly. Reaching upwards, he grabbed
something out of thin air and offered it to Kensuke with a smile. "Want a
biscuit?"

--------------------------------------------------

"You're strange," Kensuke muttered, munching on his third biscuit.

"I've been told that before," Ranma agreed with a curt nod. "You've been a
very bad boy, you know..." The pigtailed boy walked up to his throne and sat
upon it, supporting his head on his right hand. "Playing with other people's
toys... didn't your parents teach you anything?"

Kensuke blinked. "What are you talking about?"

"This EVA. It's mine. All mine, mine, mine. Get it yet?"

Kensuke stared at the other boy dumbly.

"You never asked me for permission before trying to jump-start this baby."

"It's Ranko's Evangelion," Kensuke insisted.

"Mine."

"Ranko's!"

Ranma shook his head fervently. "Mine!"

"Next thing you'll tell me is that you're Ranko!" Kensuke retorted with a
snort.

Ranma smirked, and snapped his fingers, changing into his female form. The
red-head jumped into the air, the throne and the rest of the scenery
vanishing to leave a blank white world.

Ranma floated over to Kensuke. "Satisfied?" she asked the stunned boy.

His mouth was desperately trying to work, but no sound was coming out.
"R-Ranko!" he finally managed to stammer, trying to back away in fear.

"There is nowhere to run," Ranma said slowly, advancing on the terrified
boy. "There is no place to hide."

"W-Wait!" Kensuke exclaimed, gulping. "You can't kill me!"

"And why not?" Ranma asked coldly, stopping for a moment to look at him
coldly. "You knew the consequences of invading my space with your filthy AT
field, yet you did so nonetheless. Therefore, a price must be paid," the
red-head concluded, as her eyes flared and became completely white and
pupil-less.

"But in blood?!" Kensuke yelled desperately. "Please, can't we all just get
along?"

Ranma smirked cruelly, and Kensuke bolted.

--------------------------------------------------

He never knew where he ran, only that he had to; had to get away.

Ranma was Ranko! And Ranko was scary! Scary, spelled with big, capital
letters!

"Do you really think running away will solve anything?"

God, what a condescending voice! Even Asuka at her bitchiest never sounded
like that!

"If you stop now, it will be quick and relatively painless."

Tears spilled out of Kensuke's eyes at that. A part of him chanted, "I
mustn't run away!" over and over again, but it was overpowered by another
part that wanted to live.

Why were these things happening to him?! It wasn't fair; it just wasn't!

"I've got you now!"

Defeat. Complete and utter defeat.

The bespectacled boy was grabbed roughly by the front of his shirt and
raised into the air by one powerful arm, the other rearing back for the
fatal strike that would take his life. Raising his head and staring into the
buxom girl's blue eyes, Kensuke mumbled, "Please don't kill me, Ranko!"

"Oh geez," the red-head complained, shaking her head. "Why do they always
have to whine!"

"But I still have so much to do!"

The girl smirked in response.

"I'm just a cute little virgin! I don't want to die like that!" Kensuke
shouted desperately.

The red-head's eyes narrowed. "Are you asking for what I think you're
asking?"

He could live? "Of course I am!"

The girl's eyes became narrowed slits. "I was going to do it fast, but now
you're going to suffer before you die."

Her fist was cocked backwards, and then, there was only pain.

--------------------------------------------------

Ranma stood above a broken and bleeding Kensuke, glaring at him silently.
She took a moment to wipe blood off her face with her right sleeve, before
kicking the downed boy. He moaned, coughing up some blood on the white
ground.

It was intriguing, Ranma decided. The red blood was beautiful amongst the
infinite white.

"Any last words?" Ranma asked, raising the boy into the air by his hair.

"It... hurts... so much..."

Ranma cocked her head at that. "Yes, I suppose it does. I've had worse, but
of course, I've trained to take so much punishment."

"Why?"

"Why what? Why did I train? Why was I beaten like a stray dog to within an
inch of my life? Why are you going to die here?"

Kensuke's head twitched, and his swollen, right eye opened slightly to
glance at Ranma's impassive face.

"Why... are you... so mad..."

Ranma snorted and looked away from him pointedly. "What do you know?"

It was a rhetorical question and she wasn't expecting to get a response.
Kensuke, however, surprised her.

"I know... you care..."

"I care? Bull. The only thing I care about is snapping your pathetic little
neck."

"You... gave me... biscuits..."

Ranma snorted once again, and put one hand around Kensuke's neck, still
holding him by the hair with the other. "A condemned's last meal."

"You... laughed... with me."

Kensuke was starting to see black spots across his vision, when he felt his
windpipe released and his body was rudely discarded onto the ground. Biting
back the tears the pin had brought forth, he looked up at the red-head. "You
waited... all this long. Why?"

Ranma didn't reply.

"Were you... giving Nerv... a chance to pull me... out?"

"You're giving me too much credit, geek. Maybe I just like to torture
people."

"Then why... don't you... kill me now?" Kensuke gathered his last remaining
strength and stood up on his feet shakily.

Ranma turned towards him and scowled angrily. "Prepare to be toast, nerd!"
Her petite palms started gathering massive amounts of energy, and soon a
gigantic ki blast rocketed towards Kensuke, bawling him over.

The boy lay inside a huge crater. He hurt all over, yet he was alive and
conscious. Not finding the strength to get up again, he looked upwards and
managed a small smile. "I knew... you were... a good person... deep inside.
You could've... killed me... yet you... didn't."

Ranma's entire body shook, and exploded in a bright flash of light, leaving
another person in its wake. The pigtailed boy that appeared instead of the
red-head sank to his knees and gripped his head tightly. "What am I doing?"
he asked himself out loud.

"Ranko..." Kensuke started, only to be cut off by the other boy.

"I'm Ranma. Always was, and always will be." The pigtailed boy rose from his
knees and stared at Kensuke for a long moment. "Go away. You don't belong
here. No one does."

Kensuke saw Ranma wave his hand and their bodies were enveloped in bright
orange light. "Come... with me!" he said on impulse.

Ranma shook his head sadly. "No. This is my graveyard. I should be its last
victim." Staring into the other boy's eyes harshly, he added, "Make sure of
that when you get back."

Kensuke nodded. "I... understand."

And then, the world disappeared.

--------------------------------------------------

"Kensuke. Kensuke! Can you hear me, Kensuke?"

The boy in question opened his eyes groggily and tried to sit up, only to
fall back into the seat of EVA 03.

"I'm back," he whispered, letting his eyes close slowly, unable to expend
any more energy to keep them open.

"He's alright!" he heard someone shout over the comm.

"He better be," another voice, a familiar one this time, interjected,
"because I still have to kick his ass for giving us so much trouble!"

"Asuka," he murmured with a small smile coming onto his face. "Then... you
defeated... the Angel?"

"Of course we did, you stupid stooge! Even without Wonder Girl, Rei and I
are the best pilots Nerv has! Was there ever any doubt of our glorious
victory?"

"Wonder Girl..." Kensuke recalled his encounter with Ranma. "Wonder Girl ind
eed..."

Quiet laughter soon filled his entry plug.

"What? Are you laughing at her? I'll kick your ass in her absence!"

Kensuke continued laughing quietly, laying in his chair and waiting for his
imminent retrieval.
