A Couple of Angels
Chapter 11
He felt it. The enemy... No! His opponent.
It was trying to get to...
Ranma suddenly jumped to his feet. That couldn't - mustn't - happen! He had
to stop that Angel, or all would be lost!
The pigtailed boy ran faster and faster, the tugging at his heart increasing
as he approached Nerv's Headquarters.
There it was!
Ranma noticed the arachnid Angel try to use acid to melt down Nerv's armor
plating and enter the complex.
Not today...
Launching himself high into the air, Ranma threw a ki blast at the Angel,
alerting it to his presence. Ignoring the monstrous spider's outraged cry,
Ranma landed next to it. Grinning evilly, the pigtailed boy grabbed one of
its legs and pulled hard, twisting the appendage.
The Ninth Angel cried out once more, this time in pain. Ranma's grin
widened.
Wielding the Angel's leg like a makeshift club, Ranma began beating his
opponent with it. Blood and acid poured out of the spider's wounds, but
Ranma ignored it, for his AT field defended him.
The situation seemed so funny, so satisfying... And Ranma laughed out loud,
as he continued to beat the dying Angel. Now he understood why everyone
liked to hit him so much. Sure, they all had their reasons, but it was just
so damn fun!
When his opponent's dead and bloody carcass hit the ground, its missing leg
protruding from the eye that used to drip acid, Ranma realized something.
This wasn't just fun.
It was also highly addictive.
EVA Unit 00 emerged from the hole the Angel's acid made in the ground,
quickly followed by the other two Evangelions.
Ranma's grin widened. She was here. She, who betrayed him.
Not wasting any time, he shot a massive ki blast that easily rivaled
anything Herb could dish out through the red Evangelion's chest. Unit 02
staggered back, collapsing onto its back and convulsing a few times, before
running silent.
Snarling, Ranma launched his body towards Unit 01. It tried to stop his
advance with an AT field, but the pigtailed boy ripped through it as if it
were made of thin paper. Forming a pulsing blade out pure energy, Ranma
jumped upwards and cut the purple Evangelion into two neat halves.
Sensing movement from behind him, Ranma turned around to stare directly at
the business end of Unit 00's progressive knife.
Game over.
Spreading his arms wide, Ranma closed his eyes, floating slightly off the
ground.
A few moments later, when the blue Evangelion hadn't moved, Ranma opened his
eyes and looked at it curiously. His grin returned, when he noticed that the
EVA's eyes weren't glowing.
She should've brought spare batteries...
Ranma laughed triumphantly, flying into the air until he reached EVA 00's
head. Smirking at the silent monstrosity, Ranma circled it and landed on the
Evangelion. Grabbing onto the entry plug, the pigtailed boy ripped it out of
the EVA's body and threw it roughly on the ground. Jumping down, he landed
next to the entrance hatch, and blasted his way through it.
The blue-haired girl lay in her chair, partially submerged in LCL. She
weakly raised her eyes to look at Ranma, but said nothing. His anger
flaring, Ranma walked over to Rei and grabbed her throat, squeezing it
slowly. Her fingers tried to stop him, as a tear made its way down her
cheek, but that only served to fuel his anger.
Eventually, she stopped moving, but Ranma kept on squeezing. He only stopped
when he heard the girl's neck snap, and then the pigtailed boy roughly
dropped her still body into the LCL, exiting the entry plug.
Examining his hands, Ranma stood silently a few minutes amidst all the
carnage, the wind ruffling his hair.
A voice called out for him then. A voice he knew well, but couldn't remember
from where.
It wanted his help.
Nodding in acknowledgement to the voice's plea, Ranma raised his hand and a
giant cross-shaped blast destroyed all of Nerv's protective layers, creating
a tunnel all the way to the lowest levels of the GeoFront. Smiling, Ranma
floated down, the tugging he'd been feeling at his heart all this time
overwhelming him...
--------------------------------------------------
Ranma woke up with an ear-splitting scream. A translucent barrier manifested
itself around him, pushing away the newspapers that used to cover his body
as he slept.
"So it was more than just a dream," Ranma muttered sadly.
Calming himself mentally, he forced his AT field to disappear into
nothingness. As soon as it was gone, Ranma lowered his face onto his hands,
sighing deeply.
"Yes, this is hell."
--------------------------------------------------
"Guten morgen, Shinji!" Asuka announced, catching up to the boy.
"G-Good morning, Asuka," he mumbled, looking away.
The red-head looked at Shinji strangely.
"What's the matter?"
Shinji didn't reply, biting on his lower lip instead.
"You're not afraid of Ranko, are you?" Asuka ventured.
'Gotcha!' she thought triumphantly, when he involuntary flinched at her
question.
"C'mon, Wonder Girl is not as bad as you think. So you got a scratch on your
cheek... you probably deserved it, anyway."
Once again, Shinji didn't respond, walking at Asuka's side quietly. The
red-head's gaze softened slightly.
"All right, I'll talk with her. She won't give you so much trouble anymore."
When she didn't get a response, Asuka grabbed the front of Shinji's shirt
and brought her face right next to his.
"I've had enough of this attitude. Now, spill it!"
"It's Rei," Shinji said meekly, turning away.
"Rei?!" Asuka exclaimed, letting go of him.
"Yes, Rei," Shinji replied quietly. "She hasn't been to school ever since."
"Aww, geez, it's not like Ranko will do anything to her best friend..."
"You didn't see her, Asuka!" Shinji said with surprising strength. "She
wasn't rational! And Rei... Rei's never missed both school and
synchronization tests at Nerv before!"
"So she decided to cut class for a couple of days," Asuka replied with a
shrug. "I can understand. It's so boring, after all. And as for Nerv, who
wants to do those icky tests anyway?"
"Rei! She never misses them! And it's been five days already since anyone's
heard from her..."
Shinji's voice dropped to a whisper, and Asuka sighed. While she doubted
Ranko was capable of the things Shinji accused her of, both the Fourth and
First Children were her friends, and they did miss school for almost a week.
Asuka didn't really have a choice in the matter; she would just have to
perform her duty and check up on her colleagues. It was the price she had to
pay for working with normal people... but, then again, genius prodigies like
her came only once in a lifetime. She would just have to volunteer to bring
them their homework, and then she would have an excuse to drop by for a
visit.
'And that'd also be a great chance to show Shinji that nothing is wrong,'
Asuka thought, already planning to have a little talk with the class
president.
--------------------------------------------------
"Ranko? Ranko, are you there?"
The quiet whistling of the wind was the only answer to Asuka's questions.
The Fourth Child's apartment looked abandoned, and neither Asuka nor Shinji
managed to find clues to her whereabouts. Figuring that checking out Rei's
apartment was their best option, the pair walked out back into the corridor
and knocked on Rei's door.
When no one answered even after they knocked on the door once more, Asuka
felt she had to take matters into her own hands. A glance at Shinji showed
that he was trembling as a leaf, probably afraid that Rei's bloody body
would be on the other side of the door.
Asuka didn't want to do this, but Rei was Ranko's friend and, therefore, her
friend as well by proxy. So it wouldn't really be like breaking and
entering, but visiting a friend.
It still sounded fishy to Asuka, but she was short on time and options.
Besides, she was the best Evangelion pilot to ever grace the Earth with its
presence... not to mention Nerv's most valuable asset! That had to give to
give her the right to do what she pleased, even if it involved other - but
obviously inferior - pilots.
"Rei, we're coming in!" the red-head called out, turning the doorknob. 'I
just hope you're decent.'
The sight that greeted the two pilots made them gasp in surprise. Rei's room
was a mess. Underwear was spread all over the floor, covered by dust; the
dresser that used to contain it overturned.
But most shocking of all was Rei herself, sitting on the floor in the middle
of her room, wearing a blue evening gown.
"Rei! Are you alright?" Asuka called out, running towards her.
The blue-haired girl's eyes were vacant, and she didn't acknowledge that
she'd heard Asuka in any way. Seeing that his fellow pilot was checking on
Rei, Shinji decided to tidy up the place.
When he was finished, he joined Asuka and Rei on the floor.
"Rei, what's wrong? Do you know where Ranko is?" Shinji asked, glancing at
Asuka questioningly.
The red-head indicated to him that she had no idea what happened.
"Come on, Rei," Asuka tried again. "We're your friends. Just tell us what's
wrong, and we'll try..."
"I don't have friends anymore. Dolls don't need to have friends," Rei
whispered listlessly.
"W-What did you just say, Rei?" Asuka asked, pulling the other girl to her
feet.
Rei complied without protest.
"I am just a doll; dolls..."
Asuka slapped Rei, sending the blue-haired girl reeling backwards. Shinji
was about to step in, when he noticed the tears flowing freely down the
red-head's cheeks.
"Never say that!"
Asuka shook in barely suppressed anger, glaring at Rei through her tears.
"You're a real person, not a doll! Never say that you're a doll!"
Sniffing, Asuka wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt.
"I can't... I won't lose another person like that! Whether you like it or
not, Rei, you're my friend, and I won't let you give up on yourself!"
Reaching towards the blue-haired girl, who had yet to move, Asuka grabbed
her shoulders and shook her roughly.
"I don't know what's wrong, but if you take the easy way out and give up on
yourself, I'll never forgive you! Never!" she yelled, before letting go of
Rei and running out of Rei's apartment, slamming the door shut.
Shinji was torn between going to see if Asuka was alright and staying with
Rei. While he was still trying to decide on the best course of action, he
caught a movement out of the corner of his eye.
Looking at Rei, he immediately saw that her shoulders were shaking, as tears
fell from her eyes.
"I'm crying again," Rei whispered, sniffing. "I don't like to cry. It is
simpler to just push everything away; to be a doll. Dolls can't lose
friends, because dolls don't have any friends."
Shinji walked over to the distraught girl, awkwardly gathering her into a
hug.
"Why can't I stop crying?" she sobbed into his chest, as he tried to whisper
words of comfort into her ear...
--------------------------------------------------
"Talk to her, idiot!" Asuka commanded Shinji, giving his back a firm shove.
Unable to stop in time, the boy bumped into a certain brown-haired girl,
almost knocking her off her feet.
"Y-Yes, Shinji?" Hikari asked, blushing slightly.
"Umm, well... that is..."
Shinji tried to say his prepared speech, but suddenly found his throat
incredibly dry.
Gulping, he looked the other way and mumbled, "I was wondering... if you
could do me a favor..."
Hearing Hikari gasp, Shinji quickly turned his head back towards her and
grabbed her hands urgently.
"It's not what you think! Honest! It's official Nerv business!"
'Well, sort of,' he amended mentally.
"Oh," Hikari said plainly, an unreadable expression on her face. "Just like
asking me on a date was a command from Nerv?"
"Yes! No! It was, but it's not now!" Figuring he had the right answer,
Shinji smiled. "Yeah, it's not a command now!"
"So, are you asking me on another date, Shinji-kun?" Hikari said shyly.
"What?! Of course not!"
Hikari's smile dropped, and she turned away from the boy. Thinking their
conversation over in his head, Shinji gave himself a mental kick in the butt
and tried again.
"I k-know it sounds w-weird, but please hear m-me out, H-Hikari. Asuka and
I... we need your help with Rei."
"Ayanami? What's wrong with her? Is she ill?" Hikari asked, turning towards
Shinji once more, her previous anger forgotten.
"Worse," Shinji muttered, dropping his head. "She's... well, you just have
to see for yourself. She's just about lost the will to live."
Taking a deep breath, he added, "I don't think Rei's ever had any friends
before she came here, and now she's lost one... perhaps even two. She's
really... lost... and while we're trying to help her..."
"I understand, Shinji. Of course I'll help. What do you want me to do?"
Twiddling with his thumbs, Shinji replied, "Well... we've taken her to live
with us about a week ago... but Misato-san's apartment is really cramped and
we didn't have much room to begin with..."
The boy sighed, studying his feet intently.
"Misato-san doesn't even have enough money to take care of four people for
long. So Rei can't stay with us for much longer... but we can't let her go
back to that awful place she's been staying at! It's a dump, and... and...
she'd be all along there again."
"I... I think I see," Hikari drawled out. "You want Ayanami to stay
someplace where she won't be alone, but you can't ask me directly..."
Shinji flushed in embarrassment.
"I'd ask Toji or Kensuke, but they're... well... they're guys. That's not
the kind of 'friendship' Rei needs right now. And father... father put her
into that dump in the first place!"
"Shinji-kun... as class president, I can't ignore a fellow student's plight.
Especially when that student constantly risks her life for all of us,
fighting those Angels." Winking at him, Hikari added, "Besides, how can I
refuse a request from our resident hero?"
Shinji flushed once more, this time for different reasons.
"If Ayanami agrees with this herself, she can stay with my family for a
while, until she can get back on her feet once more."
"T-Thank you, Hikari," Shinji said, bowing deeply.
"Come on, it's nothing," she replied, blushing.
Giving her a wide smile, Shinji turned around and started walking back to
class.
Stopping after a few steps, he threw over his shoulder, "Oh, and about that
date... how does this Friday sound to you?"
"Pick me up at seven," Hikari replied happily, practically radiant.
--------------------------------------------------
A second week passed without any incidents. Rei started coming to school
once more on the second day of her stay with the Horaki family. Shinji
assumed that Hikari and her duties as class president had something to do
with it. In any case, it was nice to see more of the blue-haired girl who'd
warmed her way into his heart without even trying.
Unfortunately, it was a mixed blessing. Rei had reverted to her emotionless
self. Aside for the brief moment when Asuka got through to her when she'd
visited Rei's apartment with him, the pilot of Unit 00 had seemed to retreat
back inside her shell.
However, Shinji knew the truth.
Rei wasn't shutting off her emotions; the truth was quite different. She was
just incredibly sad all the time, and simply didn't have any more tears left
to cry.
As life went on, Shinji hoped that time will set things right, and that some
day, he'd see a smile on Rei's face one more...
--------------------------------------------------
Rit-chan! Rit-chan will help me... she has to!
With that in mind, Ranma ran towards Nerv's headquarters, trying his best to
ignore the tugging at his heart. There had to be something that Ritsuko
could do; she was a doctor, after all! Doctors always knew best. Ranma might
not have always agreed with what they told him, but he believed in them.
He'd find Ritsuko, and she'd ask him what's wrong. Once she understood his
problem, she'd surely come up with something to help him and everything will
be solved. It had to be solved.
Ranma didn't want to be a murderer.
He didn't want to kill Shinji and Asuka. He didn't want to destroy humanity.
And he didn't want to hurt Rei, no matter how much she'd hurt him.
Unfortunately, Ranma found himself in a lose-lose situation. If he stayed
away from the battles with the Angels, he'd break his oath to protect Rei...
but if he showed up, the results could be disastrous.
Maybe those Angels were using some kind of weird alien weapon, or psyonics,
or even a biological toxin? If prolonged exposure to them had caused...
Well, that would explain...
That would explain why he'd felt so good when he slaughtered everyone in his
dream.
Because Ranma wasn't a murderer. He didn't like to kill, even if his
opponent was an Angel bent on the destruction of the entire human race.
Yes, there must have been some kind of drug that he'd been exposed to. It'd
explain the adrenaline rush, the moment when everything became white... it
was the only explanation!
The only explanation he was willing to consider.
Because human life was sacred and to feel joy after slowly strangling the
person that meant more to you than anyone else in the world...
It was wrong.
He wasn't a murderer, dammit! Even though he killed all of those bastards,
they deserved it! They took... they took everything from him! And when there
was nothing more to take... when he'd already lost anything worth fighting
for...
They sent him to hell!
They should have been the ones to go there! They, not he!
Why was he in their hell?!
Blinking a few times to focus his vision, Ranma noticed that he was standing
next to the entrance to Nerv's headquarters. Strangely, non of the fancy
security devices seemed to work. Looking around, Ranma became even more
puzzled upon seeing that there appeared to be an electricity outage.
Maybe everyone just forgot to pay their electric bill or something. It
didn't matter to him, since he had to get to Ritsuko. They didn't need light
just to talk, now did they?
--------------------------------------------------
"I still think you should have stayed behind, Miss Tendo," Kaji remarked
over his shoulder, crawling through a vent.
"Aww, stuff it," Nabiki growled half-heatedly, giving the man crawling in
front of her a light smack on the bottom. "Full cooperation was your idea in
the first place."
"I was referring to a mere exchange of information, Miss Tendo."
Smiling as he reached the end of his journey, Kaji exited the vent and
landed lightly on his feet.
Holding out a hand for Nabiki, he said, "I could have brought you back a
souvenir or two, Ma'am."
"Enough of this Ma'am crap," Nabiki replied, pouting. "It makes me feel
old."
"I assure you that you look astounding, and every bit of the fair flower of
Nippon Heavy Industries..."
Nabiki gagged, holding out a hand.
"Too much?" Kaji asked, tilting his head to the side amusedly.
"Just stop bullshitting me already, and show me what is it that we came here
to see."
"Very well... Nabiki-chan," he said suavely, smiling at her.
Nabiki kicked Kaji in the shin, making him jump high into the air, yelping
in surprise.
"Now you're being too personal, Kaji-baby... this is a business
relationship, nothing more."
Sighing and throwing his hands in the air theatrically, Kaji walked over to
a door and presented a key card.
"Even though the entire city and the GeoFront are without power, these
levels operate on a separate power supply," he explained, gesturing to the
emergency lights that illuminated the dark corridor in an eerie red light.
"Fortunate for us, isn't it?"
Not waiting for an answer, the ponytailed man ran the key card through the
electronic lock, causing the massive doors to open.
Offering the woman his hand, Kaji called out to her, "Come, Nabiki, and see
for yourself what lies behind Heaven's Door!"
--------------------------------------------------
Misato knocked on the elevator doors in vain, almost crying. It was hot, and
she really had to go!
Suddenly, she heard a noise coming from the lift's roof. Looking upwards to
greet her rescuers, the Major wasn't prepared to see Ranma lowering himself
into the elevator. Suddenly realizing that her blouse was open, she blushed
crimson and turned around, hastily put on her jacket and buttoned it up.
She fully expected some perverted remark, so the silence caught her by
surprise. Turning back to face Ranma, she saw that the pigtailed boy was
sitting on the floor, idly tracing circles on the smooth surface with his
right toe.
"Umm, what are you doing here?" Misato finally asked him, curiosity getting
the better of her.
"I came to visit Ritsuko," Ranma answered absently.
"Why were you looking for her in the elevator shafts?"
"I wasn't," Ranma replied, shrugging. "They were a much easier
transportation medium. I didn't have the patience to blow through every door
in this place like Ryoga or Shampoo."
"O-kay. So, can you get us out of here?" Misato asked expectantly.
"Yep."
Glaring at the pigtailed boy for taking her plight so casually, the Major
had to restrain herself from strangling him. He was a young - if stupid -
boy, after all, and couldn't see the bigger picture. Like what an irate
woman with an exploding bladder could do to him.
"Well, what are you waiting for?"
Stretching his hands above his head, Ranma replied her lazily, "We can't go
out until the Angel is defeated."
"The Angel... what..." Misato blinked at the news, before closing the
distance between them in a split-second. Grabbing Ranma's chin, she raised
his head until her eyes found his.
"We have to get out of here as soon as possible, and go help the
children..."
"Nah, I think I'll stay here. You can go, if you want to," Ranma said,
standing up and walking to the opposite corner.
"But don't you care about the children one bit? They can get hurt!"
Ranma was silent for a few moments, before replying unsteadily, "It needs to
be done."
" How can you just abandon them, Ranma? I thought you were on our side!"
"I am!" he snarled, finally turning around to glare at her. Misato recoiled
at the fire in his eyes.
"That's why I'm staying right here."
Lowering his head, Ranma mumbled, "I... I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Misato, but
it's the only way."
Misato didn't know what to say. Ranma's desire to go and help was plain to
her, now that she'd seen through the wall of indifference that the pigtailed
boy had tried to erect around himself. However, something was holding him
back.
Then it struck her. He said he'd come to Nerv to visit Ritsuko. Not
Rit-chan, like he always called the Doctor, much to Misato's amusement.
Something serious had to be going on.
'Damn it, I hate not to be in the loop!' the Major thought angrily, biting
on her nails.
Ranma suddenly raised his head, as if listening to someone.
"Matriel has been defeated. It's safe for us to leave now," he said with a
smile, fading from view.
Misato stood stupefied, looking at the spot Ranma had just occupied, when it
hit her.
"Hey, you forgot to take me with you!"
Her cry went unanswered, and Misato slumped against the wall, a sour
expression on her face.
"Jerk!"
--------------------------------------------------
"Hello, Ritsuko," Ranma greeted the Doctor, appearing at the entrance to her
office.
"R-Ranma!" she exclaimed, slightly shaken up. "What are you doing here? How
did you find me?"
"I followed you from the elevator after you rescued Misato. Once I felt you
coming to get her out, I just had to wait there."
Looking slightly apologetic, Ranma added quietly, "Please tell Misato I'm
sorry for not helping her with her... umm, problem. But she wasn't in any
real danger and I really had to meet you in private..."
Ritsuko nodded silently, raising her cup of coffee to her lips to conceal
the smile forming there.
"As for why I'm here..."
Ranma looked down for a moment, gathering his strength.
"I need your help, Ritsuko. I don't want to hurt anyone."
"I know that, Ranma," the Doctor said, sitting down on her chair. Taking
another sip of coffee from her favorite cup, she added, smiling, "You're a
bit annoying, but we can live with that."
"You don't understand!" Ranma yelled, taking a step towards her. He eyed the
walls cautiously, feeling that he was being watched somehow. "There's
something wrong with me! Something... something I can't control. I can't
afford to lose control; not with the kind of power I have!"
"Relax, Ranma." Ritsuko put the cup of coffee down, looking at the boy with
concern. "You're starting to scare me."
"That's the point! I even scare myself! I hurt my friends! What kind of
person hurts his friends?"
Seeing the worried expression on Ritsuko's face, Ranma said, "I didn't hurt
anyone physically... yet. No. What I did was much worse."
Balling his hands into fists, Ranma growled, "And now I'm a danger to
everyone with whom I come in contact."
"Surely, you're exaggerating..." Ritsuko ventured, albeit not quite as
confident of her words herself.
"A part of me wants to tear everyone apart!"
The woman's heart went out for the boy. He looked so helpless, so
panicked... almost at the end of his rope. She had to do something;
anything!
Ritsuko took a step towards Ranma, intent on giving him a hug to comfort
him. Her white lab coat caught the cup of coffee as she passed the table,
and sent it flying on a parabolic course towards the pigtailed boy.
Ranma's head snapped towards the incoming object, and before he could even
think about it, his right hand lashed out at the cup, breaking into several
uneven pieces.
As the contents of the cup sprayed both him and Ritsuko, something flashed
in front of Ranma's eyes. He saw a vision of himself, standing on top of
Ritsuko's broken body. His double hissed at him, and then casually swiped
his palm over the Doctor's prone form, shredding it into several gory
pieces.
Screaming, Ranma bolted out of Ritsuko's office, ignoring her calls for him.
Somewhere along the way, he remembered to hide himself from view.
As Ranma made his way back to the back alley that's become his home for the
past few weeks, he realized the truth. There was no help coming... no
cure...
No hope for him...
--------------------------------------------------
Commander Ikari debriefed the pilots after their defeat of the Ninth Angel.
After getting all the information that he needed, he released Shinji and
Asuka, asking Rei to remain in his office.
Having reviewed the security cameras in Dr. Akagi's office previous to the
debriefing, Gendo knew of Ranma's presence in the complex during the Angel
attack. Coupled with his discussion with the Doctor, the Commander had a
nasty suspicion that one of his plans had gone sour.
When Rei confirmed his suspicions after a short interrogation, Gendo
couldn't keep his calm front up.
Muttering a few curses, he backhanded Rei into a wall, telling her to get
out of his office. Once the blue-haired girl gathered herself from the floor
and left quietly, a large welt starting to appear on her right cheek, Gendo
completely lost his composure and started pacing across the floor of his
office. A few choice words regarding Rei and Ranma escaped his lips every so
often.
Forgotten, and standing in the shadows behind the Commander's chair,
Fuyutsuki allowed a smile to come onto his lips. Everything was going
according to the original plan...
