Subject: [FFML] [C&C][Preliminary Restart] The FFML Review for July 30 to August 4

Hi kids!

Anyway, I was going to start this as soon as the FFML
came back on but I was sick and in a wheelchair. Now,
I'm out of the wheelchair and just sick.

As it is I need to work off a little steam. I've written
a few fics and worked on ALSW 2K1 but I still have bit of
steam so I'm going to do this before the Synopses List
arrives. How did I determine the fics to review?

Simple. I reviewed each and every one of them.

So every fic submitted since exactly 30/07/01 timestamp
00:00 will be reviewed by me until 04/08/01 timestamp
17:25. The only exceptions will be the Refuge posts
and spamfics and the stuff I do not consider. ^_^

Review will be in chronological order.

Let's start.

[Ranma/AMG]

Getting Home Wednesday - Fit 3: Matriculation

by Jerry Levine a.k.a. Patch Monkey

Synopsis:

Ranma and company go to the Tendo Dojo followed
by the China contingent. Much Hilarity(TM) ensues.

Review:

Actually very funny, though if anyone jumps in
at this chapter they kinda get lost. A minor pet
peeve: writers, if you are writing a long fic and
release it in chapter spurts always try to include
a summary or if you don't like that try to be more
episodic in writing a chapter. You know, self-contained
yet part of a larger whole.

Anyway, a good fic. Funny in its own way but not
that spectacular. A bit interesting though. A few
new readers will certainly look for earlier chapters.

[Ranma]

Cinders, chapter 8

by June Geraci a.k.a. KaraOhki

Synopsis:

Ranma and Akane have a plan. A veery Evil Plan(TM)!!

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Plus a bit of citrus. ^_^

Review:

As always, the same great standards from Ms. Geraci
that I have come to expect. There are a few typos but that's
fine. Nice citrus thing there near the end part.

A good piece of work on the overall, though as I mentioned
continuing series always have the problem of readers jumping in.
It's a good self-contained chapter though and it makes the reader
want the other chapters in a good way.

[Original]

Adam's Inquisitiveness

by Troy Thomas

Synopsis:

Adam is a little boy who is more than he seems.

Review:

It's ... short. A nice little vignette, though it
is written in a minimalist style. Which makes it less
than what it could be. What does Adam look like? What
does the woman look like? What is outside? You're telling
the reader things and not showing. There were also
grammar mistakes and typos.

Again. A nice short piece. But alas, too short and
could have been better.

[Ranma]

Typical Day Scenario 34

by William Morse

Synopsis:

What is reality? Some philosophers say it is an
illusion, a dream, a figment of imagination.

For Ranma Saotome, that statement is all too true.

Review:

    My God/Goddess/Cthulhu!

This fic is probably one of the few fics that just
jolts my brain, which is pretty bad considering my
condition. I can honestly say, this fic almost killed
me. ^_^ The concept is so good and so damn beautiful,
just like that Pokemon/Matrix thing that was sent to
me awhile back.

The prose is solid. The dialogue has a smooth flow.
It is one of the best Ranma fics I've read in quite awhile.

Now, I wanna close my eyes because my head hurts.

[MKR]

Reunions and Tragedies Chapter 8

by Elf, Member of the Nikholas Toledo Zu

Synopsis:

More joyful scenes MKR's alternate world. ^_^

And there's a real cute scene at the end.

Review:

An incredible work. You could say that the author
is actually getting better at this thing. Prose and
dialogue was good. Presentation was clean, though the
format is a bit a change of pace.

As always this is a multi-part work and all the
things I mentioned earlier apply. Anyway, I expect
several new readers to look for the earlier chapters.

[Ranma/SM]

All the Small Things--Chapter 7 (Revised)

by Slacker

Synopsis:

Ranma and his other self get a little touchy-feely
in the real painful sort of way. Plus several other
things happening.

Review:

You know if I were a normal jaded fanfic reader I
would delete a fic title like that. Especially with
that [Ranma/SM] tag. ^_^

Anyway, this is actually a real good piece of work.
Of course, the original was a bit wanting and the earlier
chapters were a bit wanting, but it seems you've managed
to get the tone right.

A pretty nice piece of work though it still has a
cliche the size of the Titanic in it. But it works fine
so who am I to argue.

[Ranma]

Animals, part 1

by Gary and Yoiko

Synopsis:

Ukyou gets turned into a chimpanzee. Hilarity
Ensues(TM).

No. I will not explain it anymore than that.

Review:

For one thing, I was actually surprised by this
fic. I think the fact that I've associated Gary
with Hearts and Minds in my literary mind for far
too long.

Anyway, the fic is a funny little thing. Kinda
reminds me of the Ranma fanfiction a few years back.
Though this one is significantly better. All I can
say it is the thing has that nostalgia flavor for me
when I read it.

A good work, though I was expecting more of Gary.

[Ranma/AMG]

Rain 14 and Epilogue

by Sean D'Anna

Synopsis:

It finally ends as all Hell breaks loose.

    Also the cute little epilogue.

Review:

Sean D'Anna a.k.a. CarrotGlace and sundry other
names has been the author that has managed to both
irritate me and amuse me with his writing. I sometimes
have to think whether I should praise or flame him.
Then my head starts to ache and I black out.

Anyway, a great piece of work. Actually if you've
read D'anna's work for a very long time, you could
say this is one of his best works ever. I would even
dare say it is his masterpiece. An elegantly crafted
fic that manages to end. ^_^

[Ranma]

newRanma 10

by Chris Jones

Synopsis:

Dinner and dancing at the Chinese Embassy.

Review:

I love Chris Jones' work. I just love it. Based
on his writing alone I'd propose marriage to him to
show how much I love it. And this work is no exception.

Excellent prose. Dialogue is just smooth. And the
situations are just excellent. A great piece of work.

[Orig]

They Walk In Light 2

by Aescension

Synopsis:

We continue with Screw's little adventures in
daily life. ^_^

Review:

For one thing, this is not the sort that you
would find on the FFML. Tell me, how many people
have sent response to this? ^_^

Anyway, the prose is good but the details are
just wonky. Kate Moss? 7-11? I thought this was
a freakin' alternate world from several references
in the earlier chapter and in this one. Please be
consistent. Its the small things in this work that
totally ruin it.

[SM]

Nuke 'Em 'Till They Glow!! Ch.10 P.2 (1/??)
and (2/??)

by Benjamin "The Man" Oliver ^_^

Synopsis:

Insanity. That is all that is needed to describe
it.

Review:

If I wanted to propose to Chris for his work,
this man is the sort of person I'd kidnap and
force him to marry me. ^_^

As always an incredible piece of insanity that
will send you laughing till your head hurts so bad
that you have to take medicine. ^_^

[Outlaw Star]

Separation

by D.B. Sommer

Synopsis:

An introspective fic on Melfina post-"Outlaw Star".

Review:

A slightly sad fic. Incredibly written in the first-
person POV it just brings the thoughts and emotions across.
One of the best fics I've ever read.

[Ranma/SI]

Insertion

by Sean D'anna

Synopsis:

If you don't know this by now, I should shoot you.

Review:

I repeat. Sean either pisses me off or amuses me.

And the more this fic progresses, the more he
irritates than amuses. Anyway, if you like this sort of
thing go ahead.

[Fusion][DX/ES]

Deus Excel

by Lawrence Chu

Synopsis:

    Really funny things happen.

Review:

    A rather funny improfanfic.

It just woke me up from my little blackout so it must
be good. ^_^

[BGC][Alt][Revised]

Signs and Portents

by Nathan Baxter

Synopsis:

A lot of things happen. Battle-movers, Sexaroids,
Knight Sabers, oh my!

Review:

You know, I really should blame those folks at
Eyrie for starting the trend of BGM notices in the fic.
Personally, I feel that the habit is pretty ... stupid.
If you wanted to put music in the fic, by all means
make it into an HTML and embed the audio file into
rather than assuming that the reader has a copy of the
music.

Anyway, other than that a fair enough fic, though
I think some of the "dimmer" readers would be confused
on what the hell is going on, as well as the BGC 2040
crowd. Overall, good prose, nice description, smooth
dialogue. Though the entire thing seems to be a bit
choppy, like the scenes were just glued together.

[BGC][Alt]

The Coming of Shadows

by Nathan Baxter

Synopsis:

Some things happen. A continuation of Signs and
Portents.

Review:

    See above.

(Megacrossover)

Random Realities Ch-1 (Tentative Title)

by Paul Kish

Synopsis:

If I were kind, I'd say this was an exuberant
self-insertion fic in the style of Serendipity
and Undocument Features.

If I were a cruel bitch, I'd say this was an
attempt by someone to imitate the guys at Eyrie.

No, "imitate" is a kind word.

    "Rip-off" would be better.

Review:

I've already mentioned about BGM notices in
an earlier review. Also note that the synopsis
part has mutated into a review. Not that Eyrie
or their multitude of imitators are bad. I actually
enjoy it at times. But note that someone who likes
ice cream wold not appreciate it being pumped into
her mouth twenty-four hours a day.

Anyway, on the overall, a good piece of insane
tripe.

Hey, at least it was good tripe.

    Now, my head hurts.

[Ranma/X-men][fus]

X-genes, Ch. 2

by Kaosu Tatsu

Synopsis:

    A generic Ranma fic.

Review:

Do you really want me to review this?

Anyway, it actually wasn't that bad. I've just read
too many Ranma fics that I expect ...oh... something a
bit more. The prose would have worked for say some other
series, but this is Ranma we're talking about.

Well, on the overall, an average fic.

[rev] [FY]

Fushigi Yuugi: Turning the Wheel Part One

by Aaron Bergman

Synopsis:

Two boys get thrown into the Shijintenchishou
instead of Miaka and Yui.

Hope to God/Goddess/Cthulhu the other one doesn't
get raped. ^_^

Review:

I had a great review of the earlier version of this
and I stand by it. This is a great fic, though the
succeeding chapters left much to be desired as Mr.
Bergman said.

    A reccommended read.

[Ranma]

Meaning-Less

by Nanashi

Synopsis:

    Introspection from the Ranma POV.

Review:

Not exactly introspection but a good, light
read.

Nothing much, but you could do worse.

[NGE/Guyver][Fusion]

Legacy of the Creators, part one

by Eshin

Synopsis:

NGE and Guyver. You do know what that means?

Review:

It is actually a pretty good fic, after you get
through the crap that is the fic's formatting. I
had to cut and paste for awhile to read it properly.

A nice little fic, though it could have been
better. Fix grammar. Dialogue, my God/Goddess/Cthulhu,
everyone uses so many ellipses that its like reading
William Shatner talk. Prose is a bit weak. An admirable
effort as I said, but there is room for improvement.

[Ranma/Tenchi][Mega-cameo]

Process of Elimination -- Chapter Three

by Brian Randall

Synopsis:

Reavers are destroying the planet, as
Ranma gets his/her head messed with and several
other things happen.

Review:

An incredible fic and an incredible writer. I
must say that Mr. Randall is very good and he seems
tobe coming up with something that will rival
all his other works for the sheer power of his concept
and execution.

    Salutations, Mr. Randall.

Fics reviewed: 22

Time spent: 5 hours

************************

If you submitted in the timeframe mentioned and are not
here I didn't consider your work because of one or
more of the following:

a) Your work was too insignificant and my Ghost AI
decided that it was a waste of my time to read it.
Also the same for Refuge reposts since I intructed the
AI to move those into my archive folder than my reading
folder.

b) Your work sucked. Big time.

c) It didn't come through the FFML.

d) I blacked out while reading your fic. The radiation
therapy can do that. ^_^

Thank you very much for reading the FFML Review.

I hope to be alive for the next one, so no flames. I'm
pretty excitable nowadays. ^_^
