I'm not entirely certain that's true, Fire. Japan HAS shown respect
to the royalty and nobility of other nations. Granted, this may have been
(and still be) the sort of skin-deep psuedo-respect that Japan grants in
order to maintain the facade of politeness that's so essential to Japanese
culture, but it's still present.
And Steve's choice is rather cutting.. Spain is one of the few
nations whose language and history held together pretty well after the
Roman empire fell.
You try reading a 1000 year old epic written in Spanish, and
you can. The language hasn't changed significantly, aside from slang.
The story of El Cid is easily understood by any modern Spanish speaking
person. ENGLISH stories from the same time period are utter gibberish
to the modern English speaker. A rude mix of words from Saxon, Pict,
Angles, Norman French and Latin. Ick.
Same applies to historical records, family trees, locations..
If you make the effort, the histories of many families in Spain can
be traced as far back as 1000 AD, and in some few cases, 800 AD and
earlier.
Granted, this isn't anywhere near the length of CHINESE history
and lineage, but 1,200 years of (reasonably) uninterupted history and
bloodlines are enough to get at least a certain minimum amount of
respect from Japan as a society. And Kuno, thanks to his irrationality,
does TRY to play the part of a pre-Commodore Perry samurai. So I'd
suspect that his attitude would be mixed envy and disdain. Envy for
such a long and unbroken family history, and disdain for the fact that
it's a long and unbroken
_GAIJIN_ history.
That's about all I have to say on the matter for the moment.
Hope it helps with the story, and the discussion OF the story.
