It's never clearly stated how the Chinese guide lives, is it? So, whatever
my imagination chooses to cook up and baste will suffice. ^_^
Actually, Rumiko Takahashi did show us how the Guide lives. It's in the
Jusendo/Saffron story arc, very near the end of the series.
The Guide and his daughter, Plum, have a rather nice house on a mountain
near Jusendo. The shack at Jusenkyou is just an office, sort of like a park
ranger's headquarters. As the Guide says, "You no think Jusenkyo guide so
loyal to job 'cause of crappy pay? Job have great employee perks."
