Heya,
"Purikura" is the Japanese shortening of the word "Purinto Kurabu" (Print
Club), hence Michael's choice of the word in the text. Perhaps a
compromise
here... he should made a footnote or something to clarify this for those
readers who aren't aware of what one is...
Personally, I'd rather not have to flip back and forth between the text
of a story and footnotes. The only really good way to introduce new
words, IMO, is to work them into the story -- preferably by using them
in context, or having a character *naturally* explain them if the former
isn't possible or isn't sufficient.
I agree that I'd rather not rely on footnotes or endnotes... a story should
read smoothly and not require asides (in my opinion). It shows some
limitations of the fanfiction genre, though. I first mentioned the print
clubs back in chapter two (I think); I'd print the section but I don't have
access to my earlier chapters right now. Back then, I followed up with a
(hopefully 'natural') explanation of what a 'print club' was--in a novel, a
single explanation would presumably be enough, since the reader should be
able to remember. Of course, in fanfiction there can be delays of a year or
so (well, with my stories, anyway) between chapters, so there's no surprise
the explanation was forgotten.
This bit aside, what did you guys think of the story?
Yeah, what did y'all think! <grin> (Thanks, Gary.)
Incidentally, I thought I heard that print club machines had finally made it
over into the States. Not true?
-Mike
