It's actually a style issue, but here's what's
traditionally used:
UK english:
...proclaiming "Dante", the...
[but single quotes for dialogue!]
US english:
...proclaiming "Dante," the...
as written.
given your setting and the way you're spelling stuff,
i'm going to assume you want US english. many american
publishers think this is an unbreakable rule rather
than a style issue, so you should go with that (i.e.
what you wrote) if you intend to have this published.
