For All Eternity

No. That's just... No.

The quality of your prose is fine, and it's not like it's poorly written,
but... In the name of love, WAFF and happy endings, I must object. And
object I shall, by means of a sorta-spamfic of my own. Consider it an
alternate possibility...

"A THOUSAND LIFETIMES"

Oh My Goddess!/ Ah Megamisama! Created by Kosuke Fujishima. This is a
non-profit fanwork.

*******************

In the year 3958, humanity had long ago left the comfort of the womb of
Mother Earth and spread out across the universe, taking their place amongst
the multitude of starfaring sentients. Like a hardy strain of wheat,
humankind had taken root on many worlds, adapting and colonising, until some
forgot that the race had ever been confined to just one world. One such
colony lay on the seventh rock out from a star that the Ancients named
Proxima Centauri. According to starcharts, the planet was known by the dry
yet accurate designation of Proxima-Centauri-Seven, but her inhabitants
simply called her "Home".

In a small hospital in a bustling young city on Home's southern continent,
a small, everyday miracle was taking place. N'kima Hisan, nine months
gravid with new life, was giving birth.

The blessed event occurred, as such things always have, amidst a good deal
of pain, exertion, and finally, sublime joy as a new life entered the
universe. A new life with a very old soul.

N'kima smiled happily down at her son as he nursed contentedly at her
breast. She turned a tired smile to her husband of seven years, A'sun, who
had stood by her side through the entire ordeal. He squeezed her hand gently
and brushed a sweaty lock of her black lamb's-wool hair off her forehead.

"He's just perfect," N'kima whispered, squeezing back. "What shall we name
him?"

"How about K'aychee, after your grandfather?" A'sun answered gazing fondly
at his new son.

"Hmm." the new mother sighed pleasantly. "I like it. Welcome, little
K'aychee." Her face shone with love.

Unseen by the happy and exhausted new parents, another womanly face beamed
with joy and love. Though she stood by their side, they never noticed as she
leaned in and gently kissed the nursing child on the head. Her crystal blue
eyes welled with happiness, and she seemed to shine with an inner light.
"Welcome, beloved," the goddess Belldandy whispered. "Welcome back."

In what the scientists of the 40th century would have referred to as an
alternate dimension patterned on paleo-historic race-memories, yet another
pair of feminine lips curled upwards in a smile. It was a rare thing to see
a demoness smile in Niffleheim, and even rarer when it was not a rictus of
unholy glee. The expression Mara bore, however, was a cheerful, pleasant one
as she examined her re-activation orders. After fifty years of inactivity,
the Demoness First Class was once again on the job.

"So, you're back, huh?" she said, kicking her feet in glee as she leaned
back in her throne of bones. A pleased sigh passed her lips. "It'll be nice
to see the gang again. Skuld, Urd, Bell. It's been, what, half a mortal
century?"

She began packing up her gear as she mused about this favourite of all her
cases. She didn't anticipate having any more luck this time around than
she'd had the previous 1,890 times she'd been assigned to separate Belldandy
and the mortal who was (in one incarnation, anyway,) known as Keiichi
Morisato, but she was game to try again. After all, it gave her an excuse to
get the hell out of Hell for a few years.

She wondered what the relationship between the two would be this time
around; lover, sister, best friend. It had run the full gamut over the past
two thousand years, but it was always a bond of purest love. Briefly, the
demoness allowed herself a moment of pure envy for the middle Norn. A love
that lasts a thousand lifetimes, withstanding death itself, was worth
crowing about. It was a good thing, Mara decided, that she liked the mortal,
otherwise she'd've gotten bored with this assignment millennia ago.

The Ever-Lovin' end.
