I could be wrong about this, but I distinctly remember in the Ryu Kumon
story arc of the manga translations, that the turning invisible trick does
not require a sheet of cloth. In fact, the only reason Ranma even pulled
out a sheet of cloth during the fight against Ryu Kumon, was to
capture/steal the vacuum blades that Ryu was tossing around, and after
weakening the ground, let the vacuum out of the bag, thus allowing the
ground to be sucked up around Ryu, allowing Ranma to win. After all, it's
sort of hard to win a fight if you're buried alive under a ton of dirt.

Now I remember this because Genma made himself look a lot like a ghost
before dissapearing, and nowhere there does he pull out a cloth, when he
uses his forbidden school on Ranma for the first and only time in the Tendo
Dojo. Now, I could be wrong, and it might have been done that way in the
anime, if they had it in the anime, but it wasn't done that way in the
manga.

And he never used the cloth before, either. Nor did Ranma. This was
added merely as a stylistic effect, but that's easily removed, since he
doesn't end up using the cloth for anything.

Also, unfortunately (or not so, considering the movies ;) the anime
never went that far.
