This is the third element in the Wish Cycle. It can be read on its own, or
with its companion stories, Misato's Wish and Rei's Wish. They can be
found at my website: http://www.angelfire.com/anime3/exarkun/ or on
fanfiction.net.

Neon Genesis Evangelion belongs to Gainax, Oh My Goddess belongs
to someone else. The important part is that they don't belong to me. I
ain't makin' money off this, and I make no claim to owning these characters.

"Yui..."
Gendo Ikari reclined on his bed, holding a glass of whiskey in one hand, and
a photograph in the other. He lifted the glass and took a long drink,
coughed,
and felt the liquid burn its way down his throat. He missed his wife, missed
her terribly, and hoped beyond hope that he would see her again when the
project was complete.
Rei was a clone of Yui, of course, but it just wasn't the same. Yui's soul
was... elsewhere. Rei's soul was her own, and unique. Similar yet different.
If only Yui was still alive, he would have someone beside him, helping him
make the tough decisions. Helping him save the world.
Gendo laughed. It sounded so noble. "Saving the World". All he was doing
was getting revenge. Death took what he loved, so Gendo Ikari would kill
death. That was the core of the Human Insturmentality Project.
Gendo staggered to his feet. He'd drunk more than he'd thought, and he had
to piss. He reached the bathroom and he just finished zipping back up when
the bathtup turned itself on and began filling. He watched in confusion as
it
filled up about an inch, and then began to glow. The water pulsed, and then
exploded outward as a young girl flew upward into the room.
The girl looked around warily, shifting her stance as if expecting an
attack.
She held a staff adorned with charms and scrollwork, and sporting what
looked like a sundial on the end. She saw Gendo and spun to face him.
"Gendo Ikari, you have been judged and found wanting. I have come to
give you warning. Cease your foolish actions at once or risk the wrath of
the heavens!"
Gendo stared, dumbfounded for a moment before he could gather his wits.
"What is this? Who are you?"
The girl looked surprised and dissapointed at not being recognised.
"I am Skuld, Goddess of the Future. The future that you are attempting to
destroy!"
"I don't know what you're talking about, girl. I seek to save mankind."
As he spoke, Gendo walked out of the bathroom and sat on his bed again. The
girl followed quickly after.
"No, you seek to end death. You seek to change mankind into something it was
never meant to be. You are destined to fail, and you failure will be the end
of
humanity."
"Why should I believe you. If you are who you say, your power is rooted in
the
current world. If the order should change, and death be struck down, you
would
be forced to deal with humanity being your equals instead of your pawns.
Besides, how do I know you aren't an angel yourself?"
"Because you know when the 'angels' are going to attack. You've known for a
long time."
"So? The rest is true. You wish to stop me from elevating the human race."
"No, I wish to stop you from repeating your mistakes with your son."
"What does my son have to do with anything?"
"I know you plan. You seek to grant him godhood, and then control him to
reshape the earth as you see fit. You will fail, and he will destroy the
human
race. He has in him the capacity to do what you want, but because you have
neglected him for so long, and shown him nothing of love, he cannot possibly
do it. It is not too late to turn back. You can defeat the angels and save
mankind
without defeating death. Your son will be of great help in doing so. But he
will
need time, understanding, and your love."
"I don't have time to coddle that mewling brat."
Gendo stood and refilled his glass. The girl frowned in distaste but decided
not
to comment.
"It's not coddling, Mr. Ikari, it's giving him the love he needs to be a
whole person.
Everyone, humans and gods alike need love to help them grow. If they are
denied
it, they cannot grow up whole. They end up stunted, weak and deformed. Kind
of like you."
Gendo sat and took a swig of his drink.
"If you have nothing better to do than insult me, why don't you go back
where you
came from? You've given me your 'warning', as you called it. Your job is
done. Go
home, little girl."
Skuld sighed in defeat.
"I tried to warn you. From here on out, your actions are on your own head.
You
know the consequences. The gods will not allow you to destroy what we have
worked for for so very long."
"And I will not let myself be stopped, by gods or men."
"So be it, Gendo Ikari. You have prophesied your own undoing."
"Foolishness. You can't stop me."
Skuld slowly walked toward the bathroom. She stopped in the doorway and
turned around.
"She still loves you, you know. What you do in her name hurts her. She wants
only
for you to move on and be happy again."
Gendo leapt to his feet in barely controlled rage. When he spoke, his voice
was as
cold as an arctic gale.
"Get out. You have no idea what you are talking about."
Skuld turned and left. A flash of light frrom the bathroom annouced her
deeparture.
Gendo sat down again, and then let himself slump back over the bed. Could
she
really know what Yui wanted? No. Yui's soul had never made it to heaven.
Gendo
was all too sure of that.
He took another drink. He pulled a blanket over himself and took another. He
would
send for his son tommorrow, but he would not coddle the boy at all. If
anything, he
must be harder than ever before.
"Yui... I miss you."
Sleep found him, and claimed him for its own. He dreamed of his wife, his
son,
and his revenge.

Author's Notes: As the story of the wish cycle grow clearer in my mind, I
find the tone of the story getting darker and darker. It seems it will end
up
every bit as dark and angsty as the source material, Evangelion. The
elements taken from Oh! My Goddess will lighten the tone somewhat, but
not until later on.
I'm sorry that it's been so long between installments, but I had major
computer
problems for over a month, and didn't get any writing done. Now that I'm
functional again, it should go smoother.
As always, feedback is welcome and sought after.
