but after a little research it appears to be an excerpt 
from a once popular (and purposely ungramatical?) joke 
that ended with "If that's what you think, you have 
another think coming." 

In any case,
it's been in widespread US (I don't know about the
UK...) use since at least the 70's, and the general
acceptance of its implied meaning makes its use
perfectly acceptable.  

And not nearly as confusing. As you said, most people,
including me, had no idea the verb "think" could be 
used as a noun.
