I think the word you are looking for is sublimate.
That's the word I *wanted* to use, but all I could remember is that
that's the term for solid matter converting to gas without passing through a
liquid phase in between -- like dry ice.
I've added a search in Opera for the Merriam-Webster site. It's been very
useful when I wasn't quite sure I had the right word.
