Andrew, you bring up a wonderful point. I knew this,
because I brought it up
myself in my KOR fic (which the next chapter of is
coming, I swear) and I
completely forgot to mention this. It seems to me
that it would be a rather
important school considering that her acceptance is
at least partially a
favor from her father's friend... Perhaps then,
maybe not schoolwork is the
problem, but since she has no ambition... It might
not set well where the
entire college exists to network and help along a
career. Without interest
in that, her entire college career would be a
waste...
It really depends. From what I know, there are a few
academically rigorous colleges in Japan, but they're
all private schools, from what I know. There is a
perception that private schools are less desireable
than the public universities, but the only colleges
I've heard of that actualy make their students work
hard have been private ones. On the other hand, I've
attended a private school in Japan--one of those third
or fourth-tier ones--and it was a joke academically.
So, I'm guessing it varies.
Here's something you might want to work with, Lurker:
there is a large number of two-year junior colleges
which anyone can get into, but which were opened with
the supposed purpose of increasing the number of women
who received higher education (although they're not
necessarily all-girl schools). These schools are
generally worthless for anything but ushering women
into menial office lady type jobs, though; they end up
being an "out" for families when their daughters want
to go to college but the family doesn't want to shell
out for a four-year school.
