Didn't the one you're thinking of show up here fairly recently? I lost

archive a few weeks ago, so I can't check. Anyway, I think I like _this_
take better than the other.

No.  The one I'm thinking of is some years old.  And it's very, very

similar

to the premise used in this story.

Not that it matters much, IMHO. I know three or so stories that simply
reverses the genders of the Tendo and Saotome children, not to mention
"Ranma gets fed up and leaves". Similarity does not automatically mean
plagiarism. Lets see, from memory:

The new fic has Akane living all alone in the Tendo-ke, while everyone
except Kasumi (IIRC) was at hand in the older one

Ranma does _not_, in the newer one, assume he's there to challenge the
dojo -- Akane does. Not that the assumption was hard to arrive at, though.

Ranma arrives alone, in the new fic. And there really is no indication that
any of the others will ever show up.

Ranma certainly did not go to his mother in the older fic, or meet Tatewaki
on the street.

All in all, it's different enough.

Totally unrelated question: In the Ranma alterverse department, has

anyone

really experimented with various and sundry characters' relative ages?

Older, yes.  There are a number that probably fit this.

Trouble is, the ones I actually rmember as having an older Ranma has one
that is time-displaced in some way. (Those two being Shadow (of) Ranma and
Ranma and Akane: A love story.) Is there actually one whre Ranma was _born_
the year after Kasumi?

No.  Why would it matter?  It's only the difference of a year.

It would, especially if Tatewaki was a year younger, because he would then
be in Akane and Ranma's grade, and essentially unavoidable. On the other
hand, he would not have as much influence on the other boys, since it would
be his first year too.

And, I can easily imagine a Kodachi who'd spurn Ranma as a 'little boy'
because of the age difference.

They were mostly ideas, anyway.

If not, you should look into it, because the

similarities are rather large.  I checked yahoo and google (string

'"for

honor

and love" ranma') and found only your page(which doesn't show a

previous

version).  I also checked Rakhal's and the TASS archive.  If the story

I'm

thinking of has the same name, then for some reason it's in none of

those

places.  I do hope it was you who wrote it, considering the extreme
resemblance.

I _think_ that thing is listed on the Index, but finding _any_ specific

non-crossover shortfic there is a major chore if you don't know the

title...

(And "Ranma challenge Akane" is one of those impossible search

strings...)

I know it's on one of those, since I read it before.  Or it might have

been on

the ffml mini-archive(Is that still down?  Haven't checked in months.),

which

I went through completely a year or two ago.  I was thinking that if he

had

written the other fic, it would share the same name.  If this is not the
second version of that, though...Genma dying and Ranma spending years with

the

Amazons before going to the Tendous with the idea that he was supposed to
challenge the dojo, well, that's a pretty specific idea to be copied by
chance.  So I'm wondering.  I know other people have read the other fic,

as

well, so I think this needs to be addressed.

Tried the Index - couldn't find it among the "alterverse" fics. Lots of
other forgotten goodies, though...
