This is something I wrote the other day... not really sure where I plan to go
with this, but I thought I would put it out for C&C anyways.

Thanks.

The Past:
New York City.
1991

The nurses looked through the small window set in the door to the
patients' room. The 'patient', known only as 'Jane Doe', was a woman in
her late twenties, with long dark auburn hair that had obviously seen better
days. It was matted and greasy, prematurely gray at the temples. Her face
was lean, nearly gaunt; her skin seemed almost yellow in the low light of the
room. Her body was thin; like an early-stage anorexic. The tendons in her
hands showed clearly whenever she made a fist. She sat up in her bed, back
to the wall, staring out the window to the outside world, oblivious the noise of
the nurses speaking.

"How long has she been here?"

	"Four years...."

"Wow... 'Doe's... 'Doe's she have any family?"

"Unknown. The institution gets a check once a month from the
state to pay for her care. But no one has ever come forward to identify
her. We don't even know her real name. She won't talk to anyone."

"That's too bad... How'd she end up here?"

"Someone found her on the street, screaming about demons, and
holy warriors, and about how Atlantis would rise again.... when the cops
tried to take her to the hospital, she started fighting them. Cut them up
pretty bad with her nails, I hear. They put her in here and gave her
medication. She's been here since. Every time the docs try to cut her
meds, she goes nuts."

"Hmmmm... Well, that's why there are places like this. Want to
get some coffee?"

"Sure. Did you see the news last night? There was an story on...."

The voices faded out as the nurses walked away. The woman
simply stared out the window. She never spoke. She rarely ate. The
nurses came in to give her sponge baths once a week. They never
understood why she spent all her time staring out the window; after all,
what was there to see but the alleyway between the patient and the admin
building? They never saw what she saw... the people, faces frozen in silent
screams; the creatures, their bodies twisted, distorted mockeries of human
beings; the glowing buildings of crystal that seemed to stay just outside of her
reach.... and finally, _her_. The woman with the crescent on her forehead,
who held a staff made of the same matter as the buildings, who pointed it at
her and screamed out a word...

~Never again, ~ came a voice in the womans' head. ~I can help
you. We can help each other. Together, we can make a new world.~

The woman continued to stare out the window. *How can we do
that? You're not real. Just a voice in my head. You're the reason I'm in
here. Why should I believe you?*

~Because I can awaken the power hidden within you. I can give
you more power. Power to rule the world. Power to do anything you want.~

	*Anything?*

~Yes. Together, no one would stand against us. ~

*I... I can't. The doctors say I'm too dangerous to be released.
They say I might hurt people.*

~What do they know? Allow me to awaken the sleeping powers
within your soul, and you can simply walk out of here. All I ask is that you
serve me.~

	*How would I serve you?*

~You would gather generals, to search the world for the thing I
need to be free of the prison I have been trapped in for 3 thousand years.
Once I am free, we would wrest control of this world from the fools that
rule it. Will you serve me ?~

*Just a moment. What is your name?*

	~Metallia. Do we have a deal?~

	*I... Yes.*

And with that, the pain began. Cold fire began to flow through her
veins, as her power was awoken. Her tongue suddenly felt too big for her
mouth; her heart seemed to try to tear out of her chest. Her eyes started to
glow; first a pale yellow, then white, then blood red. Her hair floated in mid
air, as a great wind blew through the small room. She tried to scream, but
no sound came. It was like being born again. Through it all, she could her
the voice laughing. Just before she passed out, she heard the voice say one
final thing.

~Welcome back into my service, Beryl.~

	----------------------------------------------------------

Anne Garfield had worked at the New Hope Institute since 1980.
She spent the better part of a decade working her ass off, and it finally paid
off when she was named Head Nurse in 1987. She had a nice job, an
apartment in the city, and the respect of the nurses and orderlies under her.
The head honchos didn't give her any crap when it came to her work, and
she was currently dating a doctor on staff. If you asked her, she would say
that life was good, God was in his heaven, and nothing ever went wrong on
her shift.

The patient that was walking down the hall, heading for the elevator,
would seem to prove her wrong.

Anne blinked. The patients weren't supposed to walk anywhere
without an orderly to accompany them. That's why the doors were kept
locked. She would have to talk to the staff about this later, but for now...
"Hey!"

The patient kept walking. Anne recognized her. 'Jane 'Doe''. How
she got out of her room wasn't as surprising as the fact that she _did_; she
was usually too medicated to notice the staff, let alone leave the room. But
here she was, striding down the hall as if she were someone special. Anne
ran up to her and grabbed her by the upper arm. "And where are you going,
miss?" she asked, spinning 'Doe' around to face her.

"Where am I going?" 'Doe' repeated, her head down, eyes
covered by her hair. She whipped her head up suddenly, her hair flying
back. She reached up with her hand and grabbed Anne by the throat. She
smiled, lifting the nurse up until her feet no longer touched the ground. Anne
tried to speak, but the words died in her throat as she saw 'Doe's' eyes
begin to glow. The last thing she heard before the end was this:

"I wonder what your energy will taste like?"

	----------------------------------------------------------

"And leading off tonights' broadcast, over a hundred people were
found dead at the New Hope Institute in New York City this morning.
Sources say that the staff has been accounted for among the dead, and
many of the patients as well... Sources also say that the corpses had been
desecrated in some way, with many looking 'like burn victims who hadn't
been burned.' While the police are refusing to confirm or deny any details
at this moment, they will say that robbery does not appear to be a motive...."

	----------------------------------------------------------

In the apartment once belonging to Anne Garfield, the woman now
known as Beryl looked out over the city, a glass of wine in her hand. She
now longer seemed anorexic; her body had seemingly filled out overnight.
Her skin was pale in the moonlight, almost pure white. Her hair was a fine
dark auburn. Darker that red, it looked like someone had taken dark red
rubies and spun them into hair.

She had supped well this day; her body fairly hummed with power.
Her memories were beginning to awaken, as well, though it would quite
some time before she remembered everything. Metallia had told her to
expect that; the shock of going through rebirth had locked many of her
memories away. Not to mention much of her power. She could wait
though; time was on her side. She would wait, let her powers and
memories return, and then begin her mission.

Metallia had told her that she would need servants, generals; the
ones she had so long ago had most likely been reborn as well, so it was
merely a matter of finding them again. Then all she had to do was find a
way to drain off enough life-energy from the humans to free Metallia from
her damn prison and...

"And then the world will be ours," Beryl whispered, raising her
glass. She looked to the moon, her eyes narrowing. "And this time, _no
one_ will stop us." She drank, and then crushed the wineglass with her
bare hands.

	----------------------------------------------------------

Elsewhere...

Two figures stood in a room made of crystal. The walls shimmered
occasionally, as if electricity ran through them. Lining the walls were dozens
of empty capsules. One figure, hidden in a hooded cloak, stood near one.
Inside, through a small fog, could be seen a small black cat. "She will not
remember much," the figure said in a womans voice. She turned to look at
her companion, a tall male with white hair that trailed down his back. He
was dressed it a simple white tunic. His forehead bore a mark in the shape
of a crescent moon. "Why not use your real name?"

The man sighed. "Because I don't want to." He pinched the bridge
of his nose. "If she truly won't remember, then I don't want to remind her.
Too many bad memories." He regarded the cat sadly for a moment. "Best
to let her remain unaware; maybe we can start all over again. What about
you? What will you do, now?"

Now it was the woman's turn to sigh. "I will return to my post. It
will be needed more than ever, now. The turning of the wheel cannot be
denied. She will rise again."

The man looked at her askance. "Will you be around if we need
any help? Will you give us your aid, if we should need it?"

She turned away, looking out toward the room beyond. Banks of
computers met her eye. "I... will do what I must. I will offer aid when -
and _if_ - I can. There are things I will not do, lines I will not cross." She
turned back to him. "I must go. Out of curiosity, what name will you be using?"

He rubbed his chin in thought. "You know, I hadn't thought about
it much. Given my former position, and my former life..... Artemis."

She nodded. "The hunter. Nice choice."

"Thank you." He walked past her to the computers. Stopping at
a terminal, he quickly typed in the command to launch the capsule. A few
seconds later, the sound of the capsule launching could be heard. He
waited, and then typed in a few more commands. Stepping back, he spoke
in a tongue not heard in thousands of years. A metallic voice responded, in
the same tongue. That done, he walked back to the capsule room.

The woman was staring at him, surprised. "The self-destruct
device? Why?"

"That was her wish, that they find their own way, rather than be
weighed down by the past. They can have a fresh start." He stopped in
front of an empty capsule, punched a few keys, and pulled it open. "I
suggest you get out of here; the timer only has five minutes." Suddenly,
he shimmered and shrank, becoming a small white cat with golden crescent.
He looked up at her. "I guess I'll see you when I see you, Pluto. Take care
of yourself."

Pluto smiled. "Thank you. Have fun on Earth. Good luck in your
mission." And with that, she disappeared.

Artemis just shook his head. "I'm going to need it." He stepped
into the capsule, said a few words in the ancient tongue, than lied down.
The capsule closed. The computer, recognizing the cats bio-signature,
placed Artemis in suspended animation.

30 seconds later, a small object was seen leaving the surface of
the moon, followed by an explosion as the banks of computers were
destroyed by the self destruct device.

Astronomers would later attribute the small explosion on the
moon's surface to a meteorite.

End - Prelude

Anyway, C&C is really appreciated.
