NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: Tokyo 3 and 1/2

Chapter One - A new home

Katsuragi Misato studied the plan in her hands for the fifteenth time
in as many minutes. "Why oh why did they build this so complicated?"
she thought as she flipped the paper over to see if it didn't make more
sense. A few steps ahead of her on the conveyor, the young Ikari Shinji
was reading his NERV Introductory Documentation. "Sorry about this, I'm
still not used to this building," she said, trying to sound comforting.

"We've already passed this place just a short while ago," he replied
without taking his eyes off the dossier.

Misato sighed. She wondered if maybe she should just find an intercom
and call for Ritsuko... She became a bit weary of that possibility,
though, when she thought about how her friend would react this time.

The conveyor belt led them to a door, which opened with its trademark
*swish* and revealed a man, nearing middle age but not without the look
of youth still present in his demeanour. He was of average height,
wearing an outfit that seemed inspired by Chinese designs and carrying
a sports bag slung over his shoulder. His pants were dark blue and
rather loose, while his shirt was a bright red. His sleeves were
partially rolled up, revealing his forearms and their clearly outlined
muscles. His black hair was combed in a very no-nonsense style, just
letting it fall over his front and tied into a rather tight ponytail in
the back. His eyes were a deep blue and sparkled a bit as he cocked an
eyebrow at the unexpected company. "Major Katsuragi? What are you doing
here? Shouldn't you be in the Control Center?"

Misato breathed a deep sigh of relief at the familiar sight. "Aaaaah,
Saotome-san, I'm so happy to have found somebody! This place is just so
confusing and I kinda got lost on my way to the Control Center..." She
scratched the back of her head, trying to hide her embarrassment as
best as she could behind a sheepish smile.

The man smiled at her words. "You know, you remind me of a friend of
mine. Well, I was on my way home but I guess I can't just leave a
damsel in distress like this. This way," he said, slightly cocking his
head to the right.

Shinji started walking in the indicated direction, returning his
attention to the dossier. Behind him, Misato and the man followed while
they continued their conversation.

"So, is he..."

Misato nodded. "Ikari Shinji, the third child."

"I see. I'm guessing it's not really a coincidence that he arrived
today?"

Misato thought about this for a moment. "Well... His arrival was
planned a while ago, the other one wasn't. But I guess it is quite a
strange coincidence, especially since Rei isn't up to piloting."

The man just nodded and became lost in thoughts as they approached a T-
crossing in the hallways. "Left, Ikari-san." Shinji followed the
directions, but he was now assailed with questions about exactly what
was going on. What other arrival? That giant monster he had seen
earlier? And who was this Rei and what was she piloting? For a moment
he thought about asking the adults behind him, but he figured they
would have told him already if he had to know. So they just continued
in silence through the complex until they reached a big steel door
labeled 'Control Center'.

"There you are, Major."

"Thank you so much, Saotome-san, I don't know what I would have done
without you," Misato said as she bowed slightly.

The man made a small dismissive wave. "Oh please, it was nothing." He
then turned his attention to Shinji, who was just standing there,
looking rather lost and desperate for some explanations. "Ikari Shinji?
Sorry that I forgot to introduce myself, my name is Saotome Ranma. And
if things go well, we'll probably get to see a lot of each other in the
near future. It's a pleasure to have met you," he said, bowing to the
boy.

Shinji stammered "The pleasure is mine," as he returned the bow.

"Come, Shinji, they're probably waiting for us in here," Misato said as
she ran her security ID through the sensor next to the door. When the
door opened, Shinji was momentarily stunned by the sheer size of the
room inside. He followed Misato towards a group of other people, but
when the door closed behind him he could hear the man saying "Good
luck, kid..."

Misato slowly exited her car. She carefully closed the door, not
wanting to have to tape it back on like this morning. Stupid Angels.
Stupid N2 mine. Why was all this destruction necessary?

"Hello there, Major Katsuragi."

The voice snapped her out of her musings. She turned around to find
Ranma standing there, holding a plastic bag in his right hand. His
clothes looked a lot like the ones he'd worn yesterday. Then again,
Misato couldn't actually remember ever seeing him wearing anything
else. "Well, hello to you too, Saotome-san. What brings you to the
hospital?"

"Eh, I'm just running a small errand for my wife," he said, lifting the
bag a bit. "Since this is on my way to NERV anyway..."

"I see. Well, I'm here to pick up Shinji."

"Oh? I thought the fight had gone well, at least that's what I saw on
the television news?"

Misato shook her head slightly. "If you mean the fact that the Angel
was defeated, yes, that was yesterday's good news. But something went
wrong and..." She caught herself just in time before spilling the
entire story about the Eva's behaviour. She wasn't exactly sure what
security clearance Ranma had, so it would be better to be safe than
sorry. "Shinji just got a bit bruised and battered in the Entry Plug.
The doctors wanted to keep him overnight for observation, so I've come
to take him to NERV."

"I see. So, you're not actually staying long?"

"No, just in and out, why?"

Ranma seemed to think for a second before answering "This shouldn't
take me too long either. If you could perhaps give me a ride to NERV,
me and Shinji could start to get to know each other. He is going to
become a real pilot, right?"

"That's the plan," Misato replied, a slight hint of uncertainty in her
voice. The boy had been rather reluctant yesterday and his experiences
inside the Eva probably hadn't done much to change his point of view.

"So, shall we meet back here when we're both done?"

"Yeah, no problem." With a small wave Ranma walked towards the
hospital's main entrance. For a short moment, Misato just stood there
and watched him. Sigh. Lucky girl that got him...

Ranma wondered for a moment if he wouldn't be better off closing his
eyes. He wasn't used to being in a car and Misato's particular style of
driving was not helping him feel comfortable. Of course, the fact that
the back seat was filled with batteries and did not actually provide
any real place to sit was somewhat tricky as well. Shinji had offered
to get in the back of the car, but Ranma had refused. The kid had just
gotten out of hospital and didn't need any more discomfort.

"Aaaah!"

"Stupid truck! Can't you look where you're driving?" The fact that
Misato was now actually looking back at the offending truck rather than
at the road in front of her made Ranma unwillingly wonder if he had
actually told his wife that he loved her this morning...

"Erm, Misato-san..."

"What's the matter, Shinji?" The frightened look on the child's face
and his pointing finger were enough to bring Misato's attention back to
driving her car, just in time to avoid the next truck coming straight
at them. "Jeez, what's wrong with these truck drivers today? Did these
people get their driver's licenses in a box of breakfast cereals or
something?"

Ranma was about to say something about Misato's own license, but
decided against it. He had learned from experience that speaking your
mind around women is usually a bad idea. Luckily, the rest of the road
seemed to be clear, allowing Ranma to relax slightly. "So, Shinji,
you'll be one of the Evangelion pilots from now on?"

The boy hesitated a bit before answering. "I guess so."

Ranma guessed the boy was still pretty shocked by all that had happened
to him since yesterday. "Hey, don't worry, Shinji," he said, smiling to
offer the kid some moral support, "You don't have to go through this
alone. I know it may look as if you're the only one actually fighting
the Angels when you're in that Evangelion, but you have a whole
organization supporting you. You're not alone. Major Katsuragi here is
the tactical genius that will tell you what to do. And I'll teach you
to fight."

"Oh?"

Ranma grinned at the surprised child. "Hasn't Major Katsuragi told you?
I'll be your martial arts teacher."

Shinji was silent for a brief moment, trying to add this newest bit of
information to the long list of things that he still had to process.
"No she hasn't... Martial arts? But... Why?"

"Isn't it obvious," Misato replied before Ranma could. "You're piloting
the Eva through a neural link. That means that it's actually making the
movements you are thinking of. Now, we have some special guns for the
Evas with targeting computers, so that shouldn't be a problem, but if
you ever need to fight an Angel in close combat, you need to know how
to fight. So we decided that all the pilots would receive training from
the greatest martial artist in the Tokyo area, Saotome-sensei over
here."

Ranma caught her playful smile and decided to go along with it. "Now
now, Major, I wouldn't say I'm the best martial artist in Tokyo. In the
whole of Japan would be more accurate, I'd say."

Misato smirked briefly at Ranma's words as Shinji's eyes went back and
forth between the two. He wasn't sure how much of it was boasting and
how much of it was true, but it did make sense. And after all, NERV
wouldn't settle for anything less than a really good teacher, right?

"Anyway, Saotome-san, where do you need to be at NERV Headquarters? We
could probably drop you off."

"Well, I have an appointment with some pencil-pusher about getting some
special supplies for the training room. You'd think a billion-yen
operation like this would be less stingy about such small expenses, but
noooo..." Ranma rolled his eyes at the thought of the paperwork.

Misato grinned. "Heh, I know exactly what you mean. I'm glad I don't
actually have anything to do with the financial side of my department,
it would probably drive me insane. I mean, do you have any idea how
much trouble they gave me when I asked about their insurance so they
could maybe pay for a part of my car's repairs?" She shook her head and
sighed deeply, becoming lost in thought for a moment. "So, should I
drop you off at the Financial Department, Saotome-san?"

Ranma took a quick glance at the car's dashboard. "Is that clock
exact?" When Misato nodded, he thought for a second. "Well, I made the
appointment based on the time it takes me to get to NERV with public
transportation. You're getting me there a lot quicker, so I have some
time to kill. What are you two up to?"

"First, I'll have to find out where they're going to house Shinji.
After that, some basic testing and such, things we didn't have time for
yesterday basically."

"You know what, I could just tag along to the Housing Department. Maybe
they have something nice available for us. Now that the Angels are
attacking, Nerima might not be safe to live in..." He didn't like the
thought of moving, but he had a family to protect. And like it or not,
he was no match for an Angel.

"Ridiculous! They are actually going to let a 14-year old boy live all
by himself in the city." Misato stormed out of the Housing Department's
offices, dragging Shinji behind her. Ranma was waiting outside in the
hallway and for a split second he was worried the Major would try to
attack him as she was violently waving her fist in front of her.

"Whoa, whoa, relax, Major Katsuragi. I'm sure they have a good reason."

Misato sighed deeply. "No they don't. I mean, okay, I don't understand
all of it but if you don't want to live with your father, that's your
choice, Shinji. But that shouldn't mean you have to live alone."

"I don't mind, really," Shinji tried to object, but his voice was
rather faint in the face of Misato's anger.

"I just think it's wrong. A young kid like you, alone in the city...
You know, I have half a heart to just take you in myself."

Ranma raised an eyebrow at that. "Erm, I don't mean no disrespect, but
don't you live in one of those small apartments?"

Misato shrugged at the comment. "It's not huge, but it should fit two
people."

Both adults seemed to be lost in thought for a moment, leaving Shinji
to wonder where he would end up spending he night. Actually, he didn't
really care, any place would do.

"Look, Major, I agree that living by himself might not be the best
solution for Shinji. Now, my house in Nerima is rather big and well, my
wife sometimes says it feels quite empty lately. I don't think she
would mind having another young boy in the house. Besides, with the
dojo there, it would be good for Shinji's training."

Misato nodded, she had to agree it was a good idea. It would require a
slight revision of the emergency procedures so Shinji could quickly
reach NERV Headquarters when he was needed, but as far as she could
tell it wouldn't be anything drastic. She turned to Shinji, who seemed
to be patiently awaiting their decision. "So, Shinji, how would you
feel about staying with Saotome-san and his family?"

Shinji just shrugged his shoulders. "Okay, I guess."

"You don't seem too enthusiastic... Anything's better than living
alone, take it from somebody who knows. I got myself a pet just so
there would be some life in my apartment..." Her shoulders had sunk a
bit as she thought about her place and Pen-Pen. Having somebody would
have been nice, but it was better for Shinji to stay with the Saotomes.

Ranma tactfully ignored Misato's little indiscretion about her home
life and laid his hand on Shinji's shoulder. "Trust me, Shinji, you'll
enjoy your stay with us. It's a really calm place in a nice
neighbourhood." Calm... There was a time he never would have used that
word for ANY place in Nerima. Second Impact had brought with it a lot
of changes...

Shinji noted the serious expression passing over Ranma's face, only to
see it quickly replaced by a broad smile. He decided to smile a bit
too, it seemed to be the right thing to do.

"That's settled then. Saotome-san, Shinji should be finished with his
tests around 1700 hours, do you want me to drive him over?"

"Oh, no need to go out of your way, Major. I hope to be finished with
the paperwork by then, so we'll just catch the train."

"Well, okay, that's settled then. I'll just go back in there and inform
them what they can do with their stupid idea."

Ranma couldn't help but smile at the mischievous grin on the young
woman's lips as she entered the Housing Department's offices again.
"See you later then, Shinji?"

"Hai, Saotome-san. Or should I say sensei?"

Ranma was silent for a second, as if surprised by the tone in the boy's
voice. "Just call me Ranma, okay?"

"Okay..."

Ranma gave the boy a pat on the back and then turned to walk towards
the elevator. Odd kid. Somewhat... apathetic. Maybe it wasn't that
strange, considering the child's family situation. Maybe he would
loosen up a bit, living with a real family.

Ranma and Shinji stepped out of the train station, giving Shinji his
first real look at Nerima. Ranma had told him a bit about the ward
during the train ride, but he was still pleasantly surprised.
Everything about it felt... old. Not ancient, but like in the phrase
'the good old days'. It was like everything was trying to remind Shinji
of something he never actually knew: what life was like before the
Second Impact.

As Shinji followed Ranma, he looked around and saw houses that must
have been built over a century ago. Apparently Nerima had survived
rather well and so had its inhabitants. Even now that the Angels had
arrived, most people he met seemed to be smiling, content with their
lives. They all seemed to know Ranma too, greeting him as they passed
him by. And Ranma apparently knew each of them by name as he returned
their greeting. It made Shinji feel a bit lost as he didn't know
anybody, even Ranma was somebody he had only met yesterday. And now he
would be living with the man...

They came to a road that was running along the flank of the hill,
gently winding its way upwards. Shinji was momentarily stunned by the
view it offered over Tokyo 3. As the sun was basking the city in its
last rays and the darkness of night was slowly taking over, Shinji saw
the towers of steel and glass rise from under the ground and take back
their position, defying the skies.

When Shinji managed to turn his eyes away from the mighty spectacle,
his jaw actually managed to drop a few extra inches. Ranma was standing
on top of the iron railing that had been erected between the road and
what would probably be a nasty fall. Ranma turned his head and smiled.
"Impressive, isn't it?"

Shinji barely managed to nod and stammer "Uh-huh."

Ranma was slightly puzzled at Shinji's reaction, who was staring at him
and not the skyscrapers, until he remembered where he was standing.
"No, I meant the buildings. This, this is nothing. Just an old habit,
it's merely a matter of balance. I'd tell you to have a go for it
yourself, but... If you fall down the wrong side, you might hurt
yourself, so... Hey, stop staring like that, will you? Trust me, it
won't be too long before you can do this too."

Shinji had a hard time believing him, but decided it would probably be
polite to stop staring. There was a short moment of embarrassed silence
after he looked away, before Ranma continued walking home, on top of
the railing. Shinji just followed, too stunned to actually notice much
of the rest of the way.

It didn't take them long to reach a front gate, surrounded by a white
wall about 2 meters high. Next to the gate, Shinji saw a sign reading
"Saotome & Tendo dojo - Anything Goes style". Anything Goes? He had
never heard of that before, it sounded... weird.

But before Shinji could ask Ranma for explanations, he had opened the
gates and stepped inside, suddenly freezing. He raised his hand to
indicate that Shinji should remain still and silent. He slowly and
carefully scanned the area, allowing Shinji his first look at the
house. It was built in the old style he had seen all over Nerima and
appeared to be quite big indeed. The front garden was well maintained
and on the lawn just outside the door to the house, Shinji noted some
familiar boxes.

"It seems Housing has already dropped off your belongings. Which means
that my wife has been waiting for an explanation for god knows how
long..." The fact that Ranma was whispering this into Shinji's ear
didn't really help putting him at ease. He was getting worried that
Ranma was actually totally insane.

"Okay, Shinji, I guess this means we'll be starting your lessons right
away. Lesson one, know your opponent. This is very important, because
you need to know their strengths so you can avoid them and their
weaknesses so you can exploit them. It's also very important to know
what makes them angry, that's usually a really big weakness.
Understand?"

Shinji decided the best response was to just nod.

"Lesson two. When you're entering unfamiliar territory, act outwardly
as if you are expecting the best, but inside, prepare for the worst.
This is why we're going to enter the house and act like there's
absolutely nothing wrong. However, we're going to be very careful and
ready to dodge any and all attacks. Be especially wary of The Mallet."
Ranma wagged his finger to make sure Shinji understood the importance
of that last sentence, but Shinji just gave him a totally confused
look. Ranma had to admit this was probably a bit too weird for the kid.
"You know what, why don't you wait here and I'll go in alone."

Shinji watched dumbfounded as Ranma actually snuck up to his own front
door and then proceeded to straighten out his shirt, run his fingers
through his hair and just generally making himself as presentable as
possible, before sliding the door open and stepping inside with a
bright "Honey, I'm home!"

Ranma's nerves all stood on edge as he scanned the hallway, waiting for
some kind of reaction to his arrival. A fly drew his attention for a
split second before he heard the footsteps. They were coming from the
living room and they were unmistakably hers. Old reflexes told him to
run while he still could, but he knew Shinji was looking and thus he
decided to stand his ground.

As she came into view, however, his courage seemed to melt like ice
before the sun. Her eyes were as cold as a polar bear that had just
eaten a tub of ice cream and almost casually resting over her shoulder
was her trusty mallet. He managed to only take one step back in the
face of her obvious intentions and smiled as widely as he could.

"I can explain, honestly, I can!"

She stopped and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before bringing
her attention back to her husband. "I'm listening."

Although she could probably have put out a fire with the tone of her
voice, Ranma's heart started pounding like mad. He had to stop himself
from making a victory dance, since she was obviously in a good mood
today.

"Okay, look... Wait, I know. Shinji? Come over here." When the child
had entered the house, he finally saw the person that had Ranma so
worked up. She looked to be about the same age as Ranma, with a
slightly smaller stature. She was wearing a blue jeans and a light
yellow T-shirt bearing the logo of some company Shinji didn't
immediately recognize. She had a fiery red headband in her hair, which
was dark and rather shortish, about the same length as Ritsuko's. Her
dark brown eyes had not moved away from Ranma yet. But the thing that
really drew Shinji's attention was the mallet she was carrying.

Ranma put his hands on his shoulders and pushed him forward just a
step. "Shinji, this is my wife, Akane. Akane, this is Ikari Shinji.
He's the new Evangelion pilot and, well, they were planning on putting
him in an apartment in the city all by himself. Major Katsuragi felt
that would just be wrong and I had to agree with her. And since you did
say the house felt a bit empty..." Ranma tried to look as pleading as
he could, but her icy stare did not waver.

Then, she took a deep breath and turned her eyes on Shinji. Instantly,
a smile appeared on her face and a small sparkle was caught in her
eyes. "Welcome, Ikari-kun. It's my pleasure to have you as a guest,"
she said, bowing slightly.

Shinji was quite surprised at the sudden change in the woman's
demeanour, so it took him a few moments before he answered. "The
pleasure is all mine, Saotome-san," he said, returning her bow. Behind
him, Shinji clearly heard Ranma sighing in relief.

"Oh please, call me Akane. May I call you Shinji?"

"Uh, yeah, sure... Are you sure I'm not intruding?"

"Oh, not at all," she said as she laid her arm around his shoulders and
started leading him into he house. "It's just that I would have
preferred my darling husband to warn me you were coming. You know, so I
could clean the house a bit and prepare a room for you. And then
there's the food, I mean I only planned for three people. I guess
somebody will have to make due with a smaller portion..." Her tone of
voice made sure that all who heard her know exactly who that somebody
would turn out to be.

"Erm, Akane-chan, I just remembered that I erm... need to go to the
shop to get some... stuff. Could I bring back something for you? Like,
I don't know, some extra food, perhaps?"

Akane shrugged her shoulders. "If you want to. Don't forget to bring in
Shinji's luggage when you get back, I guess we'll put him in Nabiki's
old room."

Shinji had actually looked at her face from the corner of his eyes
while she had said that. And while her voice had remained perfectly
devoid of any emotion, the bright smile on her face couldn't be missed.
Unless you were standing behind her, like Ranma was... Shinji couldn't
help but wonder exactly what there was between this rather peculiar
couple.

"So tell me Shinji, how old are you?"

"I'm fourteen, Saotome-san. I mean, Akane-san."

"Really? What a coincidence, so is Tenma." She had opened the door to
what was obviously the living room. It was a rather large room,
containing a big dining table and a number of smaller tables scattered
around the walls, most of them carrying a small ornament of some sort.
Some of these were obviously not from Japan but seemed to come from all
over the world. There was also a big TV in the room and it was
currently showing footage from the Angel attack yesterday. Sitting at
the table was a boy, dressed in dark green shorts and a pale blue T-
shirt. His face looked a lot like Ranma, probably because their hair was
done the same way. But the boy did not have a ponytail and his eyes
were the same brown as his his mother's.

"Tenma, this is Ikari Shinji. He will be staying with us for a while,
so I want the two of you to become friends. Shinji, this is my son
Tenma."

The boy studied Shinji for a while, a pensive look coming over his
face. Then, he pointed with his finger straight at Shinji, now showing
him a fierce determination. "You are NOT allowed in my room and you
will NOT touch my GameStation(TM) without my permission!"

Shinji was positively stunned at the sudden outburst and it took him a
while before the actual words sank in. "Erm... Yeah sure, whatever you
say... I'd never dream of doing anything without your permission..." he
stammered, trying to appease Tenma's obvious anger.

"Tenma! Is that any way to treat a guest? I thought I had raised you
better than that! Shinji, while you are a guest in this house there is
absolutely no reason why you should do anything Tenma tells you to do.
You will be treated equally and you, young man, will treat him just the
way you would want him to treat you. Understood?"

Shinji noticed that Akane was again helping her point across by
dangling a mallet over her shoulder. This struck him as very odd since
he was sure the item hadn't been there a few moments ago. But a mallet
that size couldn't possibly appear and disappear like that, could it?

  ____________________
/ Later that night \
\____________________/

Shinji lay on the futon, staring at another unfamiliar ceiling. Besides
the futon and the boxes with his things, the room was totally empty.
The previous occupant had obviously been very thorough in leaving
nothing behind. It made the room feel cold.

His Walkman whirred as it rewound the tape. And his mind rewound the
evening.

He had accepted Tenma's apology for his outburst and they had just sat
there in silence for a while, waiting while Akane was busy in the
kitchen. Soon, Ranma came back with the food he had gone out to buy and
a few minutes later they had dinner. He had heard the microwave oven so
he knew Akane hadn't cooked it herself, but he complimented her anyway.
She seemed to react a bit awkwardly to this, as if she was embarrassed
by it. Ranma didn't help, sitting there obviously trying hard to not
burst out in laughter.

The meal itself had been very strange too. When Shinji saw the amount
of food on the table he wondered if they had planned some big party
with a lot of guests. When he asked about it, Akane just sighed and
said "You'll see." Well, that wasn't actually true, since he hardly saw
any of the food move when Ranma and Tenma started eating, but it did
vanish at an astonishing rate. Once or twice their would be a brief
moment of tension when they both went after the same piece of food,
making the whole scene look almost like a contest.

Then, all of a sudden, a clear sound of wood colliding with wood had
brought his attention back to his own bowl. Tenma had apparently tried
to steal some food out of his bowl. But Ranma had caught his chopsticks
with his own and was now looking sternly at his son. With a simple
flick of his wrist, he broke Tenma's sticks, who swallowed hard,
obviously dreading what other punishment would follow.

"Shinji is a guest in this house. What you did is very rude. Not only
that, but if he's going to pilot the Evangelion, he will need all the
strength he can get. I demand that you apologize to Shinji, now."

Tenma's reaction, however, was very different from what any of them had
expected.

"YOU are the Evangelion pilot? You were fighting that thing yesterday?"

Forgetting all about his food (or the apology he was supposed to give),
Tenma had spent the rest of the evening questioning Shinji about the
Evangelion and the Angel and NERV and all kinds of other things Shinji
simply didn't know anything about. It was only after Akane had given
him a stern look that he had let up a bit, only asking him to tell the
story of yesterday's attack twice more during the evening.

Shinji smiled as he remembered Tenma's enthusiasm about the Evangelion.
At least somebody was thrilled about it. Tomorrow, Misato was expecting
him for a bunch of tests and scans and experiments and such... He
sighed at the thought of spending a whole day like that.

At least the day after would have a semblance of normalcy. NERV had
enrolled him in a local school and it would be his first day. And Ranma
had also promised him his first martial arts lessons. He couldn't help
but wonder what other changes his life would go through in the next few
days.
