C&C welcome, realize this is my first fanfic.

Chapter 3: What is my purpose?

"Ok, Sho-kun. Lets go over the variable types again, so we are sure you know them."

"'Int' stores a integer but if the number is a large integer you use a long. 'Double' allocates more bytes then an 'int' and is thus only used for numbers with decimals. 'Char' is for characters and only stores one, when you want to store a word or phrase you use a 'string', which is a one-dimensional array of characters. With 'while' or 'do while' loops you use a 'bool' which is a logic statement that either holds a true or a false. 'If' and 'else if' are used for selection, and 'switch case' statements are any easy to use form. An array is like a spreadsheet and holds data of a specified variable type, and theoretically can be an infinite number of dimensions. A pointer allows you to pass the memory address of a variable instead of its value." (1)

"And what are the three types of loops?"

"'For', is used when you want the loop to run a set number of times. 'While', checks the condition before the loop runs the first time. 'Do While', is often used to check for user error or when you want the code to be run through at least once as it checks the condition at the end of the loop."

"What are the three things you can make a program do?"

"Sequence, selection, and iteration."

Maya and Ritsuko had both been giving Sho classes in programming as he was bedridden and it gave him something to do over those long hours that he otherwise had nothing to do. While still not anywhere near Maya's, let alone Ritsuko's, skill level with computers he was coming along rather well in his studies quickly grasping the basic concepts and figuring out how to apply them. He had recovered enough that he had be allowed to move around some for several days, but because of possible complications with some internal injuries they were still keeping him in the infirmary. The blue haired girl had been in and out some but she hadn't really talked much, and had yet to explain what she meant when they first met.

"The staff tells me you will be able to go home with Ritsuko today."

"But my injuries aren't fully healed yet."

"They're healed enough that they don't need to worry about you aggravating your injuries enough that you would need immediate medical care again. Besides don't you want to see where you're going to live?"

""Yes, I hope I won't be to much of a bother to her."

Maya giggled. "I highly doubt you will be that great a bother to your mom, Sho-kun."

Gendo once again called her into his office. As always he sat behind his desk hands steepled in front of his face, the omnipresent Kabbalist Tree was there, and the Subcommander was once again mysteriously absent.

"What do you have to report?"

Ritsuko held out the rather extensive written report he had required her to write but he didn't show any reaction to the offer. Letting off a mental sigh of exasperation Ritsuko calmly put the thick stack of papers on his desk. Gendo did not so much as glance in their direction what little expression evident in his eyes making it clear she better speak up.

"Well he is healing nicely, I should be able to take him home today.."

"See that you do."

"..even though he still has some time before he will be functioning at full capacity."

"What about his ability to pilot an Evangelion?"

"We have done all of the possible tests at this time short of actually putting him into the pilot seat. A custom plug suit designed specifically to take advantage of the his special nerve clusters has already been made and he shows a rather high potential."

"Then the sync test between Akagi Sho and Evangelion Unit 00 will be conducted tomorrow. Try to minimize the necessary staff."

"Unit 00 needs to be taken out of chyro-stasis."

"That is already being done. It has already been removed form the bakelite and will be set up for tomorrows test. Precautions in case Unit 00 goes awry again are already in place the Sync Test will proceed according to plaan and SEELE will not be informed about it. You are dismissed."

The nurses came in again and changed his bandages. Maya had needed to get back to work and mom was to busy right now to be keeping him company. The blue haired girl was in again as they apparently didn't need to do any treatments. The nurses were also changing out her bandages. As the nurses finished, he noticed that she was awake and hobbled over to her. Dragging a chair up to her gurney he sat down.

"I'm going to be going home today."

She didn't show any response indicating that she had heard but having shared a room for a while he knew that she had actually heard him.

"They say that I've healed enough that they don't need to constantly keep an eye on my condition anymore." <pause> "I never caught your name."

Once again she responded in that quiet voice that seemed unique to her "Ayanami Rei."

"I'll try to come and visit you, Rei-chan."

Long minutes seemed to pass by as Sho kept his friend company.

This however was shattered as a voice rang out, "Sho, its time to go home. Oh, I see you're keeping Rei company, don't worry you will be seeing more of her."

"Ok. Bye, Rei-chan."

As they left neither saw a single tear run down Rei's cheek.

"Maya is going to meet up with us and help you to get settled. Which reminds me I got you this as we can't have you running around in a hospital gown."

Ritsuko held out a NERV uniform much like the one Maya wore along with an appropriate pair of undergarments.

"There is a restroom over there. So why don't you change into that?"

"Ok." So saying he proceeded to the restroom and changed into a more appropriate garb then that which he had been wearing before. Coming out he disposed of the hospital gown in a nearby trash receptacle. (2)

"Well I must say the uniform suits you."

They proceeded relatively quietly down the various corridors from there until they made their rendezvous with Maya who was wearing her civvies.

"Well he certainly looks handsome in that uniform, doesn't he Sempai."

Sho had the good grace to blush at that.

Maya decided against some good-natured teasing, more because she wasn't sure her boss would approve than anything else.

"Are you ready to go Maya?"

"Sure."

"Well then lets go ahead and get moving, it is already starting to get late."

The drive to Risuko's apartment was uneventful and except for a little small talk, quiet. Ritsuko pulled into the designated parking spot for her vehicle and the group extracted themselves from the car. Swiping her card through the reader the door unlocked and they went in. The room was rather spartan in its decorations and except for an area near the desk loaded with papers around a computer, tidy. In other words the exact opposite of a certain college friend of Ritsuko Akagi's.

"Well Sho your room is the second one on the left."

Sho went to the door of his room and slid it open.(3) There was a computer on a desk, a futon, and in the closet a few more uniforms just like the one he was wearing. Sho looked around and smiling turned to look at his mom.

"Thank you Mama-san."

"Hey, I helped pick out the computer and requisition those uniforms."

"Thank you Maya-chan." Sho could help but grin.

"I made sure that the programs we have been working with were loaded on to the hard drive, you should be able to further refine your computer skills on it." Maya returned the grin, "Maybe in a few weeks we'll let you gain some experience, actually helping me with my job."

Ritsuko watch the interaction between Maya and her son. A part of her that she hadn't thought would ever come forward practically glowed. Even if he wasn't of her own body Sho had grown on her and she now thought of him as her own. At the same time she had a persistent worry. A worry that 'it' would happen again.

Sho tossed and turned in his sleep.

They had left him. Putting him into a state of stasis they left leaving him asleep until..

Sho woke up to find the alarm clock going off, the memory of the dream fading away like sand through splayed fingers as he sat there in a cold sweat.

Ritsuko led him to a part of NERV that he had not been to, which wasn't really saying much as they hadn't really let his leave the medical ward. Ritsuko stopped before a door turning around she handed him a package with some sort of suit in it.

"That is a Plug suit, you will wear it while the sync test is being conducted. You will not wear anything under it and the control to make it seal is on the left wrist. There is a changing room over there."

Sho went into the changing room. They had went and removed his bandages at the infirmary not because the wounds had healed but instead to prevent them from interfering with his plug suit for the initial sync test. Feeling the weird growths at his back in curiosity he spent a moment looking over himself seeing how bad his injuries actually were. He then looked at the suit itself an interesting piece of work it was mostly gray with light blue highlights, on the chest in black was the number 00. Black outlined the inside of the arm to the about halfway down the outside of the calves. A regulator valce whose shape was strangely familiar was in the chest area with a smaller version of the same below it. The part of the suit visible around the neck was the same light blue as the highlights. He then donned the Plug suit hooking up the cathers and various other internal tubing. Picking up the two gray connectors he hooked them up. That done and the suit settled around him he pressed the switch at his left wrist, creating an airtight seal between him and the suit.

Walking out of the cubicle he met his mother who now opened the door that she had previously stopped at. He walked along the dark catwalk light from the door providing the only illumination. As the door closed the floodlights came on revealing it. It being a ridiculously large humanoid construct with a cyclopean eye.

Ritsuko looked at her son trying to see his reaction to Evangelion Unit 00. Surprisingly he didn't show shock or surprise but instead seemed to calmly be examining it with rapt interest an expression on his face she had never seen before cold, cautious, and weary. She walked up on him and put her hand on his shoulder.

At the physical contact he shook out of the strange mood he had been in. It was strange it seemed natural in a way but alien in another, it was almost as if for a moment he had been someone else.

"That over there is the Entry Plug, get in and we'll proceed."

Ritsuko left for the Command Center on the opposite side of the cage. Sho proceeded to the Entry Plug climbing in.

Ritsuko entered to command center, they had been able to sit it up so only her, Maya and the MAGI system would be needed to conduct the test. Gendo stood at the observation window gazing impassively at Unit 00.

"Begin the Test." Gendo ordered in what Ritsuko knew as his command voice.

Maya began rattling off the stages as they happened, "Inserting the Entry Plug. Commencing Entry Plug LCL injection."

*Please don't let it happen again.*

"Connecting to main power supply. Transmitting power to all circuits. Starting the Activation Systems. Voltage is increasing to critical point."

*Work like your supposed, this time.*

"Voltage has exceeded the critical point. Inserting synapses. Transmitting pulse. Connecting to the A-10 nerve."

*Come on.*

"Approaching absolute critical line."

*Please.*

"Sir, the circuits are flowing back on themselves were losing control again."

"Eject the Entry Plug."

"Cancel that order."

"But sir.."

"If he dies we will have suffered no loss. If he however manages to suceed then we will have a use for him."

Ritsuko gritted her teeth she didn't like it in the least but there was nothing she could do about it. Once again the monstrosity that was Unit 00 broke free sending debris at the armored observation window though it merely bounced off. Once again Gendo did not react except to smirk even when the debris came straight at him. Once again it pulled back its enormous fist to strike at them. Once again it moved towards them, Ritsuko closed her eyes the internal pain to much for her to really bear as tears escaped from her eyes.

*Why did this have to happen again haven't both of us suffered enough already.*

"Nooooooooo."

The fist stopped. The Evangelion's other hand grabbing the offending limb and stopping its progress.

"I won't let you hurt them."

Sho found reality disintegrating around him leaving him in a place where such concepts as up and down ceased to have meaning.

"Who are you?"

Sho turned trying to find the source of the voice but only found emptiness.

"What are you doing here?"

He turned again but still found nothing.

"I.."

As suddenly as it had disintegrated reality reestablished itself. Sho once again found himself in the Entry Plug as he felt it impacted something.

"Entry Plug ejected."

The Entry Plug self ejected from Unit 00 once again hitting the ceiling and dragging on it but this time Unit 00 did not rampage in the background. Ritsuko raced to the cage to try and help her son as Gendo continued to watch impassively from the observation window.

"Did he sync?"

Maya who honesty had been more then a little shocked by the series of events read off the data from her console. "Yes, sir he somehow managed to establish control over the EVA as it began to go wild."

"Excellent. Schedule work on Unit 00 for next week."

*SEELE it appears that I now hold a important card you know nothing about. This boy could be useful in ensuring that things proceed according to my plan.*

Gendo left the command center a smirk of triumph the only real expression on his face.

Ritsuko raced down the corridors swiping her ID impatiently through the doors preventing her from reaching her son. Opening the last door she raced towards where the Entry Plug lay. Before she could reach for the emergency hatch though it opened from the inside releasing a flood of LCL carrying Sho with it. Sho pulled himself up onto his knees in front of her.

"I didn't hurt anyone did I?"

"No, you did a good job. You.."

Before Ritsuko could continue he coughed up blood and fell over passed out.

Author's notes: Yet another chapter worked out. What did you think I was going to replace Shinji with Sho? This chapters main function is further character development and to begin establishing his function at NERV. In the next chapter we will start to get into the Angels showing up and causing havoc.

1) Programming variables and their uses based off C++. If you knew about them before hand good for you. If you still have no idea or it is blowing your mind don't worry it isn't really relevant. I admit I'm kind of showing off that I know the information, but I'm also showing that Sho is learning the information. Basically Sho's function in the Technical division is being established. If you are wondering about 'goto' it is disallowed in structured programming. Eliminating 'goto' being one the main reason structured programming arose.

2)If you are wondering about his original clothes they were pretty much reduced to rags anyway so they are history.
