Subject: [FFML] Re: [fanfic][Hellsing] Do Not Go Gently
Interesting story... The only thing I have a problem with are the
silly
Hellsing names (it should be "Helsing", for one), but those are not
your
fault :). These names are something I'd like to see changed even if
it
means they'll differ from series canon.
I really have to wonder where you got that idea. It's Hellsing, quite
clearly, on the cover of the manga scans I have--and that's not
edited.
Well, in Dracula it's clearly "Helsing" :). Hellsing the anime is
practically a Dracula "fanfic" as it is, so I think the names should be
written as they are in "canon" :). I'm also quite sure female knights
aren't called "Sir" (I remember someone on this very list saying the
correct for would be "Dame").
Heh. It's been 10+ years since I read Dracula, so I don't know.
Somebody
else emailed me about that, and about Dame. I do have to say, though,
that
reading Helsing or Dame Integra would be off-setting for me. You are
more
familiar with Dracula, and some others with English knighthood, but I
don't
know if most readers of Hellsing fanfics would consider those more
natural.
Before this discussion, I had read another Hellsing fic, which used Dame
instead of Sir. It annoyed the hell out of me. So, different people,
different preferences, I suppose.
In this case, I used 'Sir' for two reasons.
1. She's referred to in the anime as 'Sir Hellsing', not 'Dame'.
2. She deliberately dresses and acts in a masculine manner - apparently
due to her position.
As for Helsing or Hellsing... I used the latter because that's what's
there in the anime. Moreover, the anglicizing of the name (which is
essentially what's gone on here) is more understandable when you
consider that Germanic names weren't looked upon highly in Britain
around 1914-18 or 1939-1945.
The names I ultimately got from the subtitled anime. I'm pretty sure
whatever name they had for Walter was wrong - that looked like someone's
typing error, there - but the other names, for the most part, sounded
like what was said by the characters. Sorry if any of you take offense,
but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
At any rate, thanks for your comments, both of you.
