Depends on which he means, I assume he's referring to Cologne, but....
Obaasan= Grandmother, or a respectful address to an elderly woman.
Obasan= Aunt, or a respectful address to a middle-aged woman (assuming you
are younger)
It may be better just to translate it, I for one am very particular about
romanizations for this sort of thing, since the extra vowels make a big
difference. Another favorite to leave out is the extra "i" in Oniisan.
Onisan would be "Mr. Devil/Demon/Etc." while Oniisan is elder brother, but
even I have to admit I like using (o)niisan, since it flows much better off
the tongue than elder/big brother does.
Apologies for my digression, but I thought it might be helpful for those on
the list not familiar with this.
