But in truth, it really boils down to the fact that other than

What do you mean, "almost unheard of"? What about "Yukarimobile"? It's like
the most famous car ever. OK, well, maybe the old generation knows Mach 5
better :-) FLCL is almost packed with Volkswagens; we have Excel creating
traffic jams and accidents; Robin the witch hunter almost never leaves the
car (unless she rides her scooter). Not to mention whole series like
Ex-Driver.
Heck, anime is used for product placement these days, it seems, although
I don't know for certain if they get paid for it. Witness the
immediately recognizable Audi A4 from "Spirited Away", for example.
(And the veritable ton of guns in anime like "Cowboy Bebop", "Noir",
"Gunslinger Girls", "Bakuretsu Tenshi" and "Madlax", all of whom were
immediately recognizable from only a few frames...)
You know there seems to be a lack of "moms" too... Just about every
anime character is missing a parent or two for one reason or another,
sometimes they're dead, sometimes lost, sometimes just off doing
adventurous things in China, and sending back magical artifacts
containing strange goddesses...
This is noticeable, I agree. Things like Junkers are rather an exception,
and surprise, surprise, that one was an acrimonious marriage. The matrimonal
landscape is so bleak that Bulma and Vegeta are almost a normal family.
Mmm... The first thing that springs to mind is Kenji and Ikuko Tsukino
of Sailor Moon. Then there is the "Happy Family" that is Ayeka's and
Sasami's, though they haven't shown up much yet. Aoi Sakuraba also has
her parents, still. As do Keichi and Megumi Morisato, who we discussed
earlier. Beyond that, I have no idea - most other characters that I
remember lack at least one parent.
(Come to think of it, there weren't any mothers in Full Metal Alchemist
either - not live ones, anyway).
