This for some reson reminds me of Pokemon....

There was a Pokegirls fanfic series, where that was how society treated
those who became "poke".  (It made slaves out of them instead of
corpses, but the socially imposed dehumanization due to no fault of the
dehumanized one was perhaps worse for it.)  Perhaps that is the
connection you're thinking of?

 throwing Magical girls into a pit and see who comes out... live on
pay-per-view.

The problem with that is, MGs don't have an intrinsic reason to try to
kill each other.  Sure, you can impose one a la Battle Royale ("kill
each other or you all die"), but probably most MGs would just try to
work against the imposition.  The resulting one-sided slaughter by
those willing to kill would not be as satisfying to an audience as
honest combat.
