Since it's an Elsa, I may as well try to actually get off my hinder
and give some C&C... or at least, give some observations.
Blame the boys and girls over at the Drunkard's Walk Forums.
It's a fact! We all blame our fanfiction on the actions of others!
Anyway, enjoy for awhile.
...or at least until the next chapter of Pulp Hellsing get's published
on the ML.
Set in the Dances continuity, this is where the "And Beyond" part of
the .sig below comes in.
Well, just to say, I have a vague idea as to what's going on with
that, it'd probably be a good idea if I read them through.
Lieutenant (j.g.) Tamaki Yumiko of the Her Majesty's Galactic >Survey Vessel Ten'ou looked at the specimen with interest.
Made of darkened steel, it was, for all respects and purposes, >a perfectly serviceable kunai, a weapon from the dark feudal ages of >Old Earth. The fascinating thing about it was that it wasn't made on >Earth. It was from the planet below them.
Oh. That's an original approach. I've seen the geography, when it's
actually brought up that is, most authors either don't bother trying
to explain the shape of the geography or even go so far as to say that
it actually is in Modern day earth. It's a minor thing, I know...
A week ago, the Ten'ou had dropped out of lightspeed in >response to the manatron detector lighting up, a sure indication of >human settlement. The survey vessel's primary mission was to seek >colonies lost from the Weave, the great interplanetary network of >arcanotech communication devices that maintained galactic >civilization, since the Great Fall. The blue-green orb, ever so like Old >Earth, was home to one of these.
Aha, the PC game Homeworld comes to mind since something quite similar
happened as part of the story. Now all we need is the choral version
of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings to set the mood. :p
<UBER snip>
"The secondary continents and most of the island chains have >developed in the same manner, though the single exception has >developed into a rather advanced technocratic society vaguely like >early twentieth century Japan. The overall tech level of the world >ranges from late twentieth century to some very advanced, obviously >retained or rediscovered after the Fall, technology like power armor >and energy tech, though there are rather noticeable omissions like >nuclear power.
Wouldn't be much of a world if they did have Nukes... besides, giant
frogs are much better. :)
"Ever seen an episode of that old anime, Ranma 1/2, Captain?"
Himeko grinned in response.
"Actually, I was there when the Hino Rei collection was >donated to the Imperial Historical Society. They showed a full six->hour run of it."
*Gurgle, splat, dies* Oh all the things had could have survived, THAT
had to make it through... :p And stuff like RG Veda and Cowboy Bebop
stay packed on ice. Bah! I say.
"Imagine that, up the destructive potential by a factor of a >hundred and throw out the romantic hi-jinks and you have a normal >battle in the war. For most of these 'ninja', stealth takes the back >seat to raw power. Pretty much everyone else is cannon fodder when >the high-level stuff comes out."
Well, that's not exactly true. There's still a lot of emphasis on
stealth and information over raw power. IIRC, Ibiki made it a point
that information was the most important thing to consider during a
mission.
"A systematic acceleration of planetary socio-cultural and >technological development so as to ready them for integration into >the Imperial system." The doctor shook his head and grinned ruefully
Humph. Someone's being a tad presumptious. Must have taken diplomacy
lessons from the GOP. :p
Captain Mizuno chuckled. "No need for that. The blood of >Serenity always breeds true and you won't have to arrange anything. >They'll end up as leaders whatever you do. Just take into account
that they can ... warp the fabric of an entire society with their >presence alone."
"Oh."
Nothing a simple assasination can't handle. :)
"Heh. Haven't heard one of these called by that name for a long >time. I always preferred the collocquial anyway. And you're quite >correct, crafting henshin pens is a lost art, but this was from a cache >made from before the fall. Specifically, a cache of unbonded henshin >pens."
Henshin pens? Ninja senshi? Can't see it... why can't I see it!
Arg! It hurts us, precious!!!
The captain of the Ten'ou smiled in satisfaction as pointed at >the pink-haired woman. "That is Haruno Rukia." Her finger moved to >the blonde. "This is Uzumaki Aki."
D'oh! So much for the assasination idea... though, by all rights, I
should have seen it coming sooner.
Lady Captain Mizuno of Her Imperial Higness' Survey Service >gave her audience a serious look.
"Do everything in your power to protect them and their >descendants."
The two women, the man and the cat could only nod in >response.
So, hoping for a fluke that prevents Naruto and Sakura to be born is
rather moot point now, eh? Ah well. Not sure I like these folks,
talking as though they already know what's gonna happen, but that's
the, uh, 'rabid moderate' political activist in me speaking. :)
Kind of a slow start, but that's what prologues usually are. Right?
Right. They set up the stories to bring the whole thing into focus.
Now, if only I could do that too.
Now, onto the second chapter!
