a description attributed by real estate agents and developers to one of
the most frequently encountered types of low-cost, single-inhabitant
apartments available in Japan. The acronym stands for "one bedroom,

AEUG -
the Anti-Extranatural Union Group, a private paramilitary force
rumored to have ties with both UN-AEGIS and Anaheim-Nergal.
The group first appeared during the Greater Indochina Conflict of the
1970's, and continues its activities to this day. (Reference: Zeta

Akashic Record -
the ambient ki field of Earth, long cultured by the psychic
impressions of humanity. Every idea that anyone has ever had is
documented somewhere within. (Reference: Fate - Stay / Night)
Anaheim-Nergal Ltd. -
a prominent American weapons firm, specializing in military
contracts. During World War II, the participation of Anaheim-Nergal
in the Manhattan Project allowed for the development of such
innovations as the Phase Transition Engine and the N^2 explosive.
Anaheim Mechanical was founded in 1865 by a man named Edward

Artificial Distortion Field -
a spatial distortion created through boson manipulation. Used in
automated missile defense systems around the world. AD-Field for
short. (Reference: Nadesico)
Ba-Bao Zhai -
a pseudonym used by the notorious master of the Sun-Moon Sect, a
ki user said to have driven himself to the brink of insanity in the
process of mastering his ultimate technique. He wreaked havoc
across China until shortly before World War II, and vanished
thereafter without a trace. The name Ba-Bao Zhai means, "the old
man of the eight treasures." In Japan, he is referred to as Happousai.

Don Genosai -
Invader Serial #S12IG; also known as "Sylvester Genosai." A
close-combat type paranormal. (Reference: VS Knights Lamune &
40 Fire)
Dragon Balls -
a group of mythological artifacts reputed to summon a wish-granting
dragon upon collection. In reality, the legend of the Dragon Balls is a
corruption of an old Chinese tale regarding the Dragon Pearl, a red
stone said to give immortality. (Reference: Dragon Ball)
Gatekeeper -
a channeler of the Akashic ki-field, capable of tapping into simple
recorded concepts and manifesting related effects in reality.

Gehirn Institute -
the international bioinformatics research organization that houses the
Human Genome Project, based in Geneva, Switzerland. (Reference:
Evangelion)
Hellsing Foundation -
a private paramilitary group serving the interests of the Anglican
Church, charged officially by the Crown of England and the Council
of the Round Table with certain specialized matters of national
security, usually relating to paranormal activity. The Foundation is
one of several currently active sub-agencies of MI17. (Reference:
Hellsing)
Hunters' Guild -
a licensing service that provides an annual examination for
individuals aspiring to find employment in the intelligence
community. Those who pass are issued an internationally recognized
ID, and granted unlimited access to a certain set of benefits; if
conditions are met, they are also given a chance to learn a form of
advanced ki manipulation known as "Nen," the knowledge of which
the Hunters' Guild monopolizes. The organization was founded under
the direction of Bismarck in the mid-to-late 1800's, but has since

Invader -
a class of paranormal; specifically, a type of inanimate relic capable
of self-replication and revision, created by a unknown Gatekeeper.

IPW -
Ion Plasma Waves. Prior to the 1980's, the popular culture of Japan
referred to the broadcast of IPWs as "Kai-Denpa" (weird or strange
radio waves), describing it to possess miscellaneous paranormal

Itabashi District -
a district in the capital city of Japan, Teito, which prior to the city
replanning in 1947 extended into the district now known as Nerima.

Ki -
the class of particles which exist within the higher-order continuum
known as the Ethereal Plane, the existence of which was theorized in
the early 1800's, but not verified until the development of the Phase
Transition Engine during the Manhattan Project. Ki structures bear a
representative relationship with entities within the tangible world,
such that the modification of ki patterns in the environment can bring
about environmental change. The condensation of ki within the
Ethereal Plane causes its conversion to common matter/energy. The
ki patterns attached to the living are referred to as souls. Otherwise

The Knights Iscariot -
a knightly order founded to serve the less public interests of the
Vatican, established in 1326; also referred to as "the Morticians."

Lebenskraft -
originally, the "vital energy" said in legend to power the spells of
sorcerers. During the Second Reich, a group of German researchers
associated the term with the mysterious force -- referred to in the
Orient as "chi" or "ki" -- observed to be manipulated by Asian
martial artists for a number of purposes. The organization of their
findings was the basis of the type of ki manipulation now known as

Liddo-kun -
a mascot character created by the WHK animation staff in 1982, the
hero of a children's television series by the same name. After a run of
one season, the series was taken off the air due to a lack of popularity.
Its timeslot was taken by the phenomenally popular Mahou Shoujo

Mansion -
a Japanese term, used to refer to apartment complexes. (Reference:
none)
Minato -
a district in the capital city of Japan, Teito, a small section of which
is the popular tourist location known as Azabu-Juuban. "Minato"
means "harbor," but the onyomi pronunciation of the kanji is "Kou."
Various sub-districts in the area use this latter pronunciation as a part
of their name. The location often mistakenly called "Minato-Minami"
by non-Tokyoites, for example, is actually known as "Kounan" to the

MI17 -
the Agency of Commonwealth Paramilitary Affairs, a secretive
government agency serving the Crown of the United Kingdom. Not
much is known regarding its role in the intelligence community.

MI18 -
the Agency of Specialized Cultural Affairs. MI18 is officially an
academic research body, heavily affiliated with the British Ministry
of Education. For reasons unknown, it appears on the roster of
military intelligence agencies. Chief amongst its active sub-agencies
is the Royal British Library's Division of Special Operations.

Misaki Township -
a suburb near the capital city of Japan, Teito; the current base of
AEGIS - Far Eastern Branch. Between 1998 and 1999, a series of
bizarre deaths occurred in the region, ending with the slaughter of
Tohno Shiki, a resident high school student. The perpetrator was

Nanban -
a Japanese term referring to the Occident. Literally, "southern
barbarian." (Reference: Ranma 1/2)
Nekokoneko -
a mascot character designed by Azuma Kiyohiko for Mediaworks Inc.
and Genom, copyright 2000. It first appeared in volume two of
"Puchi-Sami Daioh Recycle" as the animal sidekick of Mahou
Shoujo Tomato Chiyo, Jyuusai, a rival of Pretty Sammy. (Reference:

Nen -
a character in Chinese and Japanese meaning "will." The word was
adopted into the West in the mid-1800's, selected by a group of
German researchers as the name of a modern, systematic approach to
ki use, heavily founded in the empirical categorization of ki
applications. Knowledge regarding the practice of Nen is
monopolized by an organization known as the Hunters' Guild.

Otousan (also known as Chiyo-Chichi) -
a mysterious mascot character whose plush dolls started appearing in
Japan late in 1998. Shortly thereafter, rumors appeared on the web
alleging the doll to be the cause of numerous unexplained paranormal
incidents. Despite heavy discussion, nothing of the sort was ever
confirmed. The owner of the copyright to the character is known only
as NHK. No other details are available. (Reference: Azumanga

Paranormal -
an entity that at least partially demonstrates the characteristics
attributed to living organisms, but fails comprehensive biological
qualification in conventional science. (Reference: Gatekeepers)
Ryokuchuuseki -

Seikigaku -
the study of vital energies, a personal interest of Tokugawa Ieyoshi,
the twelfth shogun of the Tokugawa line. In 1830, he commissioned
a small group of researchers to perform a dedicated exploration of
the field. (Reference: Yu Yu Hakusho)
Silent Moon ~Chinmoku no Tsuki~ -
a controversial horror film produced in 1985, fictionalizing a series
of true events that occurred near the Hino Jinja, a Shinto shrine in
Azabu-Juuban. In the film, a group of young girls discover
themselves to be the reincarnations of a court of demonic nobles
from beyond the "Tsukiyo no Mon," a gateway that opens into the
afterworld once every two thousand years. Though the plot implied
lesbian relationships, the film was a cult classic, and widely regarded
to be the best Japanese horror movie ever created. (Reference: Silent

Stave -
a regional notation used in interdimensional theory. The term was
adopted from an obscure Nordic myth regarding the relative
locations of Midgard and Valhalla in a primitive imagining of the
multiverse, then referred to as the "Sea of Chaos." (Reference:

Teito -
the imperial capital of Japan, renamed from Oo-Edo in 1864.

Tenkaichi Budoukai -
an international mixed martial arts tournament held roughly every
three years at the Budoukan in Teito, Japan. As of the year 2000, the
tournament has been held 28 times. The reigning champion is a
Chinese national by the name of Sun Wu Kong. In Japan, he is

Tokyo -
a renaming proposed for the city of Teito in 1864, rejected for

UNAF -
the United North American Federation; the governmental body that
controls the entirety of the North American continent, founded in the
aftermath of the German-Japanese occupation of the United States of
American during World War II. (Reference: Gundam)
UN-AEGIS -
the United Nations Advanced Extranatural Global Intercept System,
a foundation created to address incidents of extranatural incursion
and various forms of antagonistic paranormal activity. (Reference:
Gatekeepers)
UN-SEELE -
the United Nations Strategic Elite Extranatural Limitation
Engagement, a security council charged with the execution of
military countermeasures in the event of a major extranatural
incursion. The current chairman is a German by the name of Kiel

Wombat -
any of several stocky burrowing Australian marsupials of the family
Vombatidae, somewhat resembling a small bear and feeding mainly
on grass, leaves, and roots. (Reference: none)
ZAFT -
the Zodiac American Freedom Troop, a terrorist organization with
the intent to overthrow the United North American Federation.
