What the deuce does it matter that they are different from "ordinary"
human beings? They are rational, intelligent beings; to borrow a term,
they are 'hnau': http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Transwiki:Hnau
Once we have understood this, things much simpler. The fact remains
that there are things which MUST NOT BE DONE to hnau and the doing of
these things is what we call a "crime against humanity". Genocide is
still genocide, whether it be directed against a tribe of Indians or a
tribe of wood elves. Anyone who would argue otherwise is a monster.
Of course, 'crimes against humanity' committed in fiction against
fictional people are a far different thing from the monstrous crimes
that have from time to time been committed in reality. But it is my
belief that a writer has an obligation -- be it to his deity, his
characters, his readers, or to society in general -- to ensure that
his sub-creations -- his stories -- do not pander to any sort of
desire for such crimes. Simply evening the gender odds, as you did in
your response, does nothing to alleviate the incredible wrongness
involved in thinking these sorts of things are okay.
Let me be clear; I'm not saying it's wrong to depict murders or rapes
or any other sort of hideous crime in fiction. Some stories may
require these events. Some stories may have protagonists who commit
such crimes, or have in the past committed them, and attempt to
justify for them. And it is right that some of these stories be written.
But it is wrong to glory in these crimes. And that is what the
Pokegirls world does. Reversing the gender situation -- making it a
Pokeboys world instead -- does not and cannot change this. I thought
you were better than this, Adrian.
