Hello there,

Ran across and purchased a neat little book this week that I think could be of interest and maybe even of use to the people on this list. It's called 'Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide'. Written by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt, illustrated by Tatsuya Morino, it's a pocket-sized book detailing about 50 Japanese demons, spirits, monsters and what nots. Each entry provides a concise yet informative summary of a creature, and is accompanied by a page-sized color drawing. Abilities, weaknesses and the habits of each yokai is listed, along with brief retellings of a story concerning it, traditions attached to it, and speculations on the themes and origins behind the creation and development of the monster. 'Yokai Attack' contains entries for creatures any casual student of mythology and legendry have probably heard of, such as Kappa, Kitsune, and Tengu (both Raven and Long Nosed); more obscure creatures like the Nue, Umi-bozu, and the Hashi Himi;
 and even yokai of recent development, like the Kuchisake Onna.

As I said above, I think 'Yokai Attack' is neat, and I recommend it as a reference guide for anyone interested in using traditional Japanese monsters in their fiction. It is not a comprehensive guide - the authors' admit such in their introduction - but it will serve as a good starting place for anyone wanting to learn more about Japanese ghost traditions and folklore. It's also a bit expensive for a book of its size, running $14.95 US, but it's well worth the price if you have some money to spare.

Happy reading,

Jeremy Harper
