The Untold Story

Disclaimer: Ranma 1/2 belongs to Rumiko Takahashi and whoever else she
sold the rights to. Chojiro is an original character who belongs to me.
I am making no money off of this. If you want to use him, ask.

Disclaimer 2.0: I haven't seen this before, and I apologize if I'm
inadvertently copying someone. Even if you are an avid Akane hater,
please read try to read. It is merely a short explanation piece to what
might have happened.

---

There he was, waiting for me at the front of school, like he does every
morning. Even Nabiki's knowing smirk couldn't dampen the warm fuzzy
feelings that sprang up in my heart. Seeing him stand there, a book in
his face while occasionally pushing up his glasses when they slid too
far down his nose, always brought a smile to my face.

"Chojiro! Hey!" I cried out to him, getting his attention.

Predictably, Chojiro's head snapped up at the sound of my voice. A
bright, warm smile appeared on his face as he spotted me. It still made
me giddy when he smiled at me that way.

"Hey, Akane! I've been waiting for you!" he said, smiling at me all the
while. He put away the book in his school bag as I neared him.

"How are you doing this morning?" I asked him, part of the morning
ritual.

"My day has gotten a lot brighter since you got here, Akane." He always
said stuff like that. I know it's just flattery, but coming from him,
it still makes me feel wonderful inside. I give him an extra-big smile
to show my approval.

We link arms together as we stride toward the school. The two of us
have been dating for a while. Nabiki had sold the information to
whoever was interested as soon as it was confirmed we were both dating
seriously. It was a small step for the both of us when we decided we
might as well act like we were dating, since everyone in the school
already knew about it.

"I'll see you at the usual spot during lunch, okay Akane?" Chojiro was
breaking off to go to his own class.

I nodded to him to show I agreed. "Of course, Chojiro." As if anything
could spoil a relationship such as ours. He was truly a wonderful
boyfriend.

---

During one of the many break times between waiting for teachers, two of
the girls in my class approached me. They were Yuriko and Kaoru, from
the gymnastics team.

"Akane, do you think you could help us?"

I smiled, a little bit uncertainly. "What is it you need help with?"
Please don't let it be another Romeo and Juliet play; I couldn't help
thinking that, even if the chances of these two asking that particular
thing were small.

"Well, we need more gym time for gymnastics..." began Yuriko.

"The captain of the kendo team keeps stealing it from us!" Kaoru chimed
in.

"...and we were wondering, since your dad taught you martial arts and
stuff, if you could fight Captain Kuno for us."

"He told us that in order to get more time, we'd have to pick a champion
to defeat him in honorable combat," ended Kaoru sadly.

Was it not a martial artist's duty to help those weaker than themselves?

---

Kuno contemplated the matter for a few moments after I challenged him.

"I cannot fight a girl such as yourself," he finally stated.

"What, you don't think I'm good enough?" I challenged.

"It would go against the code of the samurai, which I live by, if I
fought against a defenseless woman."

I blinked at this. Defenseless, was I? I'll show--

Wait! Perhaps I could get him to concede without a fight!

I couldn't help the smirk forming on my face. "If you will not fight
me, then you forfeit the match." It was a win-win situation. Either he
forfeits and the gymnasts get their time, or I get to pound this jerk
into the ground for thinking I was defenseless.

"Alas, I cannot allow that. It goes against the code of the samurai
even more if I do not accept the challenge presented before me. I shall
satisfy my honor by allowing my fellow kendo club members to battle
thee. Should you defeat them, I would deem that you are indeed a worthy
opponent."

By this time, I was very confused, and not a little irritated. "Doesn't
weakening your opponent before a match go against the code of the
samurai?" I asked in exasperation.

"I assure you my intentions are honorable."

There was the word again. Honor. It's like he was using it as a shield
to get away with doing whatever he wanted.

"Fine! I accept those terms!"

---

Those pathetic kendo members were weaklings. I hardly worked up a
sweat. Okay, so maybe I was breathing a little hard, but that was just
because I took on five guys at once, all right?

"Very well! For proving your worth, the Shooting Star of the kendo
world, Tatewaki Kuno, shall allow you the pleasure of doing battle with
me! En garde!"

I didn't really have time to react to the sudden attack logically; my
reflexes kicked in from years of practice, and I landed a perfect
snap-kick to his unguarded face. It was probably a surprise to both of
us that he fell over, unconscious, without so much as a whimper.

"Woah... to defeat Captain Kuno with one kick! This girl really is
good!"

The rest of the kendo club muttered their amazement and praises, but I
ignored them. "Just remember to give the gym to the gymnastics club!" I
said with a huff. All that buildup and there wasn't even a decent
fight.

---

"Wow Akane. You seem to be attacking your lunch with more... vigor,
than usual. Is your sister's cooking especially good today?

I forced myself to slow down on eating and push the bento box onto my
lap. It took a couple of deep breaths, but afterwards I finally got my
rage under control enough to talk. "I'm just mad at that jerk Kuno.
Making me fight his whole kendo team without putting up a decent fight
himself. Don't worry about it."

He smiled at me, and whatever anger I was feeling immediately drained
away. Somehow, with only a smile, he convinced me that everything would
turn out right.

Chojiro finally stated, "Well okay then. I won't worry."

The rest of the lunch passed much more pleasantly.

---

Nabiki smirked at Kuno. "Sorry Kuno-baby, but Akane is already going
out with someone."

"Who is the person that has captured the affections of the beauteous
Akane Tendo?" Tatewaki Kuno asked the heavens.

Nabiki was feeling generous today, and decided to give the information
for free. Besides, it's not like Kuno couldn't ask anyone else at
school, and this way Nabiki kept up the illusion that if Kuno wanted to
find out anything, he'd have to come to her. "I'll spot you for free
this time, Kuno. Chojiro, from class 2-B."

"What?!" exclaimed Kuno, aghast. "A weakling such as that man does not
deserve her! He does not have the strength of arms to be such a match
for the Goddess Akane! I, Tatewaki Kuno, will not allow it! There
should be some sort of rite of passage to allow one to date a beauty
such as her!" declared Kuno.

Nabiki smirked, amusement evident on her face. "What are you going to
do? Tell everyone that in order to date Akane, they have to beat her in
combat?" she joked.

"Of course! The only way to truly show that you are worthy to date her
is to defeat her in battle! Why didn't I think of this before?"
proclaimed Kuno as he ran out of the classroom.

Nabiki looked sick. She didn't think Kuno would have taken her flippant
remark seriously.

She should have known better.

---

Today was quite possibly the most embarrassing day of my life. It was
supposed to be a normal, everyday school speech contest. And it was,
right up until Tatewaki, Mr. "I've-Got-Shooting-Stars-For-Brains" Kuno,
hijacked the event to make his ridiculous announcement.

To date me you've got to defeat me in combat? Get real! Like anyone
was going to take that ludicrous line seriously....

---

The next morning, everything changed.

The scene in front of me looked as if a nightmare had come to life. I
couldn't believe it. It seemed like every boy associated with a sport
of some kind, and many that weren't, all lined up along the school
ground waiting for her. At that wasn't the worst part; when I spotted
him, I swore my heart stopped.

There he was. Chojiro. Standing in line wielding a baseball bat. He
didn't even play baseball--didn't like sports in general--and yet there
he was, lined up with the rest of the mob. No book in hand, no
absent-minded look on his face; instead replaced by a mask of
determination.

Chojiro went along with Kuno? Agreed to the entire thing?

Inside, something broke. My heart felt like it shattered into a million
pieces at that moment. For a few seconds I couldn't even breathe.

Then, from the shards of my broken heart, I could feel a righteous fury
rise from its depths.

Boys weren't to be trusted. They betrayed you. Blossoming from the
depths of my soul, I felt a scream rip from my mouth that would become
my battle mantra:

"I HATE BOYS!"

Author's Notes: I wrote the majority of this around the time I first
started writing, and never really got around to finishing it. Thought
I'd toss in a few words to close the gaps so I can say I've done some
writing lately. Let me know what you think!
