I guess I should add that everyone signing up to my board in the
wake of my question is the single largest wave of new users I've
had since I moved the forums a year ago.  The community is rather
stable and doesn't change much.

Which reminds me -- I normally send out individual emails that
say "answer me to prove you're not a spammer", but I can save
a little time this way:

If you're MattV or thundertenshi, let me know so I can approve
you quickly.
