We've been talking about this in background as well; as far as I can
tell it isn't so much the ML software (mailman) as it is a combination
of other things - character set in use by the client and how the
receiving client handles these things are particularly present, but
something I learned is that Mailman's back end libraries (particularly,
python-mail  - I think) does some odd modifications - mostly in the way
of the attachments and such.  The Mailman developer notes that this is
how the library handles it; I don't think he has the energy to rebuild
the lib to his making. 

(A side note - I'd take it to another list platform, but a) I haven't
found much better that I can install on Bast, b) I don't really want to
go to a free-hosted model if I can avoid it at all, and c) replacing
the software is a bit like replacing the pipes in your home not only
with new pipes, but also with all of the hot/cold tap valves reversed -
and this somehow modifies the way your electrical outlets work as well.)
