The problem with sites Facebook and Twitter is that they’ve become so useful and thus so widely used, that to not have one is seen as weird. This apples to all Social Media, come to that.
That being said, while the list is still the best for the posting and critiquing of fic, we really ought to have something else to cover socializing, downtime announcements, sharing of tips, tricks, techniques, that sort of thing. What, I don’t know.
And as far as ads and trackers, may I recommend installing the following extensions on any web browsers you may use. Not all of them are available on all browsers, but for me, this blocks like, 95% of ads.
Ublock Origin
Ghostery (This tends to interfere with some web functions such as car dealerships and the like. You’ll probably need to tinker with a bit)
Privacy Badger
HTTPS Everywhere
DuckDuckGo (Turn off the default to their web browser)
Facebook somehow overrides adblockers, but the above combo seems to cut the overall number of ads, which I suppose is the best I can hope for.
